TL;DR
Australia has received its first cold front of the year, just in time for the winter season. The snowstorms typically begin in May and continue until early June, covering the mountains in snow. Recently, Perisher has received nearly 6 inches of fresh snowfall, which is not enough to start riding but has cooled the ground and prepared the resort for making snow. This marks the beginning of the winter season in Australia, and more snowfall is expected in the upcoming weeks.
The first major cold front has arrived in Australia and it’s right on time. The mountains in Australia typically see a number of snowstorms roll through from the start of May until opening day in early June and the current cold snap as spent the last few days dropping the temps well below freezing. This morning we are seeing Perisher has seen 15cm (nearly 6”) of fresh snow blanket the region turning the resort into an overnight winter playground. Whilst it’s no where near enough snow to begin riding it is enough to cool the ground and get the resort ready for pumping those snow guns in the lead up to opening day.
