Vail Resorts Resurrects Plans For Six Pack Chairlift At Perisher

Perisher Resort, one of Australia's premier ski destinations, is gearing up for a significant transformation. The National Parks and Wildlife Service has recently initiated public consultation on a proposal to grant a lease to Perisher Blue Pty Limited for the construction and operation of a cutting-edge 6-seater chairlift in the Perisher Valley ski area of Kosciuszko National Park. This development could mark a game-changing moment for the resort and its visitors. Public comments on this proposal are being accepted until October 25, 2023.

A Modern Upgrade for Perisher Resort

The proposed lease, under Section 151 of the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974, outlines a development that could reshape the skiing experience at Perisher. Perisher Blue Pty Limited, with the lease's approval, intends to replace the existing double and triple chairlifts with a state-of-the-art 6-seater chairlift. This new chairlift is poised to provide more efficient and comfortable transportation for skiers and snowboarders while offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

Key Details of the Proposed 6-Seater Chairlift

Here are some key details of the proposed project:

  • Lease Term: The proposed lease term is from commencement until June 30, 2048, with an option for an additional 20-year extension from July 1, 2048, to June 30, 2068.

  • Structural Enhancements: The 6-seater chairlift will consist of 27 lift towers, a top station, and a bottom station. This new infrastructure promises to modernise the resort's skiing and snowboarding experience.

  • Highest Lifted Point in Australia: The new chairlift is expected to reach an elevation of 2042 meters, making it the highest lifted point in Australia, surpassing even Thredbo's Karels T-bar, which stands at 2037 meters. This elevated position will provide riders with stunning panoramic vistas of the surrounding area

  • Improved Accessibility: The project aims to enhance accessibility by adding two new skier bridges at the bottom of Towers for easier access. Additionally, the bottom station will be situated lower than the current triple chair, improving the overall experience for visitors.

  • Restaurant Upgrades and Snowmaking: While not yet confirmed, part of the project includes potential upgrades to the current restaurant located at the base of the double chair and widening of Towers run with additional snowmaking, further enhancing the visitor experience.

Funding and Expectations

The project, estimated to cost around $19 million, awaits approval within Vail Resorts' financial system. Vail Resorts, a Colorado-based company listed on the US stock exchange, annually announces its expenditure plans for upgrades. With a substantial number of upgrades already planned for their North American resorts, the fate of the Perisher project hinges on their decision.

An Overdue Transformation

The need for this transformation at Perisher Resort is evident, especially considering that the current double chair was installed back in 1961. The proposed changes align with the resort's grand plan, promising a significant boost to both accessibility and the overall skiing and snowboarding experience.

If approved, this project could redefine skiing in Australia, offering a modern, efficient, and comfortable way to explore the stunning slopes of Perisher Resort. The prospect of reaching the highest lifted point in the country is sure to excite avid skiers and snowboarders.

As the public consultation period continues until October 25, 2023, this is a unique opportunity for all stakeholders, from skiing enthusiasts to environmental advocates, to voice their opinions on this exciting development. Perisher Resort's proposed 6-seater chairlift marks a significant step towards a more exhilarating and accessible future for winter sports enthusiasts in Australia.
