Severe Flooding in New Mexico Prompts Search for Missing Residents

Ruidoso, New Mexico is grappling with the aftermath of severe flooding that has left three people missing and caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure. The flood, triggered by heavy monsoon rains, has prompted a large-scale rescue operation and evacuation efforts across the region. Local authorities and emergency services are working tirelessly to locate those unaccounted for and assist affected residents.

The flooding occurred rapidly, with the Rio Ruidoso rising nearly 2.7 metres in minutes. This sudden surge overwhelmed local infrastructure, sweeping away homes and vehicles. Emergency crews have conducted at least 85 swift water rescues, extracting people trapped in homes and cars. While no deaths have been reported, three individuals were hospitalised and are in stable condition.

The National Weather Service issued flood warnings for the area, which was particularly vulnerable due to recent wildfires that had stripped nearby vegetation. Eyewitnesses reported seeing homes floating down the river, underscoring the severity of the situation. The community has rallied together, with local businesses providing shelter to those displaced by the floods.

As the floodwaters recede, search and rescue teams continue to scour the town for the missing individuals. Public works crews are clearing debris from roadways, while residents are urged to exercise caution and seek higher ground if necessary. The flooding has also impacted the local horse racing industry, with reports of casualties among the equine population.

This disaster follows a pattern of extreme weather events in the region, including the devastating wildfires of 2024 that destroyed an estimated 1,400 homes and structures. The burn scars from these fires have made the area more susceptible to flooding, as the damaged terrain is unable to absorb large amounts of rainfall effectively. Local officials are working to assess the full extent of the damage and develop long-term recovery plans for the affected communities.
