    TL;DR

Perisher Ski Resort, the largest ski resort in the southern hemisphere, is hosting its first-ever Slush Cup Event series from September 29th to October 1st, 2023, to close out the snow season. The family-friendly events include The Pond Skim, where skiers and snowboarders compete for the best wipeout, trick, and costume; The Dash, inspired by the 80s' Dash for Cash event, challenging participants' endurance and strength with prizes at stake; and the Banked Slalom, a thrilling competition full of berms, jumps, and bumps. These events promise fun and excitement as visitors enjoy spring skiing in the sunshine at Perisher. Limited spots are available for participants, so early sign-ups are encouraged.

Perisher spent the week teasing that something was on the way, we had a feeling it would be a collection of spring events but it was fun to watch what everyone on social media thought it would be. Thankfully we didn’t need to wait too long before the details of the first ever Slush Cup arrived in our inboxes. The closing weekend of a season is always a blast as the resorts go all out to put on events and parties in the sunshine and this years at Perisher there is a whole weekend of events lined up. Check out all the details below.

    Perisher Slush Cup

Perisher's first-ever Slush Cup series to round out the 2023 snow season The family-friendly events will be a great way to end the 2023 seasonThe Pond Skim, The Dash and Banked Slalom are capped, so please be quick to sign up! Perisher Valley, NSW: Perisher Ski Resort – the southern hemisphere’s largest ski resort – will host its first ever ‘Slush Cup Event series’ running from September 29th to October 1st to round out the 2023 snow season. The family-friendly events include The Pond Skim, which will see skiers and snowboarders compete for best wipeout, trick and best costume; The Dash, which is inspired from Perisher's original Dash for Cash event from the 80s where skiers compete to win prize money! While Banked Slalom will be full of plenty of berms, jumps, and bumps to keep the adrenaline pumping.“Spring skiing is always a good time – bluebird days, light layers and sunshine – it’s a great time to visit Perisher,” said Maddi Ventura, Field Marketing Manager at Perisher Ski Resort.“We are really excited to run these events for the first time – it’s going to be a lot of fun! Why not combine a spring ski trip with the silliness of our inaugural Slush Cup?!” added Ventura. Slush Cup Event 2023 Series: 29 September – The Dash: Reminiscent of Perisher’s iconic ‘Dash for Cash’, The Dash is the ultimate test of endurance, strength, and grit as skiers and snowboarders navigate a long, multi-stage course. We’re talking lung-busting ascents, challenging traverses, and daring downhills all while trying to negotiate a series of natural obstacles. ‘At what cost?’ we hear you ask. Well, not only will you be a part of Perisher’s first-ever ‘The Dash’, there’s also a whole heap of prizes at stake including good, old-fashioned cash. 30 September – Banked Slalom: If you’re a fan of a bumpy ride, you’ll love our Banked Slalom. Not a competition for the faint-hearted, Perisher’s Banked Slalom will be full of plenty of berms, jumps, and bumps to keep the adrenaline pumping. You’ll have just two shots at being crowned Banked Slalom royalty, with your best-timed run counting towards your score. It wouldn’t be a competition without prizes, and there will be plenty as well as goodie and merch giveaways throughout the day. 1 October – Pond Skim: We’re sending the season out with a splash by bringing back a fan favourite: the Perisher Pond Skim. What’s more fun than launching yourself down a run into a pool of freezing cold water? You’ll want to dust off your best costume and bring your skimming A-game with prizes for best fit’, trick and, – always a crowd pleaser – best wipeout. We have you covered if you’d rather stay dry though, with a heap of entertainment and giveaways on offer throughout the day for both spectators and participants. “Come along and celebrate the end of the season with staff, guests and the local community. There is limited numbers for participants, so please sign up early – this will be big!” added Ventura.

Maverick Mountain's Only Chairlift Destroyed as Sand Creek Fire Tears Through Montana Ski Area

Maverick Mountain's Only Chairlift Destroyed as Sand Creek Fire Tears Through Montana Ski Area

Firefighters saved every base building at Maverick Mountain, Montana, but the resort's sole chairlift didn't survive the Sand Creek Fire. Owners Erik and Kristi Borge say the lift is "most likely" out for the 2026/27 season after flames tore through the mountain on August 8. The wildfire has since grown past 27,700 acres with zero percent containment. It's a gutting result for the tiny, one-lift operation near Dillon - though the lodge, groomers and equipment all made it through untouched.

Spain Moves to Ban Smoking at Ski Resorts Under New Tobacco Law

Spain's government has approved a draft tobacco law that would ban smoking across a wide range of outdoor spaces, including sports venues - a category Spanish winter sports media expect to cover ski resorts, potentially extending to slopes and lifts themselves. The rules would also apply to e-cigarettes and vaping devices, even nicotine-free ones. The bill still has to clear the Spanish parliament before any ban, signage, or fines can take effect.

South Tyrol Approves New 16-Person Ciampinoi Gondola in Val Gardena

South Tyrol has approved a full rebuild of the Ciampinoi cable car in Selva di Val Gardena, replacing the current 12-person gondola with a 16-person cabin and a new mountain-station restaurant. Capacity is capped at 3,200 people an hour rather than the 3,600 the operator wanted, and 250,000 euros must go toward compensatory measures. No construction or opening date has been set, though the upgrade is partly aimed at clearing bottlenecks before the 2031 Alpine Ski World Championships.

Resort Spotlight: Hoshino Tomamu - Corporate Japan's Mountain Playground Revisited

Hoshino Tomamu is the ski resort equivalent of a conference hotel that happens to have excellent powder. Built for corporate retreats and package tourists, it offers genuine Hokkaido snow on surprisingly limited terrain - 29 runs spread across 585 vertical metres.

La Thuile's New Cable Car Replaces Two Ageing Chairlifts

La Thuile is spending 38.7 million US dollars on a new 10-person cable car linking Les Suches to Chaz Dura, replacing the La Combe and Chaz Dura chairlifts after nearly forty years of service. Built by Leitner, the new cable car runs 1,950 metres to a top station at 2,576 metres, carrying up to 3,000 people an hour with a six-minute ride. It also improves the connection to La Rosiere in France via the Petit-Saint-Bernard Pass, and is on track to open for the 2026/27 season.

The Remarkables Adds Scarpa Bowl to Its Inbounds Terrain

The Remarkables is adding new inbounds terrain for winter, bringing the Scarpa Bowl - known locally as the Toilet Bowl - into its lift-accessed network after years as backcountry-only ground. The roughly 500 metre run is reached by bootpacking from the top of the Sugar Bowl chairlift, with a shuttle picking skiers up from the road at the bottom. It's a smaller, faster addition than the resort's planned Doolans expansion, though the new terrain hasn't opened yet due to a lack of snow this season.

Ski Portillo Cut Off After Storm Dumps More Than 4.5 Metres of Snow

Ski Portillo remains isolated after an extended storm buried the Chilean resort under more than 4.5 metres of snow, with both ground and air access suspended since Tuesday while crews monitor avalanche hazards and worsening weather. Resort officials say further snowfall is expected in the coming days and haven't set a timeline for reopening the mountain road. Once access resumes, the scale of the snowpack could set up a strong season at one of the Southern Hemisphere's most historic ski resorts.

Resort Spotlight: Lotte Arai - Japan's Corporate Ski Anomaly With 22 Metres of Annual Snowfall

Lotte Arai receives 22 metres of annual snowfall - exceptional even by Japanese standards - but its corporate ownership model and limited terrain create an unusual cost-benefit equation. Here's what the numbers actually mean on the ground.
