Hotham Auctioning Chairs From Their First Chairlift

Hotham’s Playground double chair, the resort's first chairlift, operated for almost half a century before being decommissioned in 2018. Now, you have the chance to own a piece of Hotham's history as the resort auctions off 57 of these iconic chairs. Whether you want to use them in your garden, lounge, or lodge, you can get creative and have a one-of-a-kind slice of Hotham with your name on it.

The auction is open to all and will take place both in-person and online. The opening weekend will feature 15 chairs up for auction at The Bird on June 10, from 4pm to 6pm. The remaining chairs will be auctioned online via Givergy starting from June 11.

According to Nathan Butterworth, VP + GM of Mount Hotham Skiing Company, the Playground Chairlift holds significant memories for those who used it as children. It was the resort's first chairlift, a two-seater that opened in 1969 and served as the main access lift back to the village until 1993. Butterworth expects strong interest in the auction and looks forward to seeing how the highest bidders will creatively incorporate these chairlifts into their businesses, public spaces, or homes, becoming conversation pieces for family and friends.

If you're a true Hotham ski and snowboard enthusiast, this is an opportunity to add a unique piece of memorabilia to your collection. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to local charities through the Epic Promise Foundation. This foundation is dedicated to bringing together mountains, communities, employees, and guests to foster a passion for the outdoors, conserve the natural environment, and support local communities for a sustainable future.

Important Note: Chairs purchased must be collected from Mt Hotham Airport following closing weekend, between 8am and 4pm from Monday 2nd to Thursday 12th October by appointment. You will require at least a 6 x 4 trailer or single cab ute with suitable tie downs and at least two adults do assist with the lift in. We will be in touch with all successfull bidders closer to this date to organise collection. If for some reason you cannot make the collection window, a holding fee may apply.
