Resort comparison
Falls Creek vs Hotham
Quick take
Falls Creek and Mt Hotham sit about 65 kilometres apart in Victoria's Alpine National Park, both on the Epic Pass, both opening the same weekend in June - and yet they are remarkably different mountains. Not just in terrain, but in how they feel, how you get there, what the village is like, and honestly, who they're actually built for.

Terrain & trails
Total runs, difficulty mix, and skiable distance
Falls Creek wins the beginner category and it's not debatable. Two magic carpets in a dedicated learning zone, separated from the rest of the mountain, with progression into Easy Rider and then onto the pomas. Drovers Dream is the standout run — wide, long enough to actually build confidence, with views down to Rocky Valley Lake that are unmatched at beginner level in Australia. Hotham's Summit area is solid and well-positioned for early-season snow, but the variety is smaller and the access road alone can rattle first-timers before they've even clicked in.
Intermediate is where it gets interesting. Falls Creek has 60% of its terrain in that category — Ruined Castle is the go-to, Big Dipper if you want speed, Shadow Ridge and Dark Side if you want to find fresh snow after a dump. Hotham's answer is The Orchard: a committed traverse to get there, 10 to 12 runs through snow gums, uncrowded, and a remote feel that Falls Creek simply can't match. Blue Ribbon Chair, when it's running, is the best sustained intermediate vertical in Victoria.
Advanced and expert riders, the answer is Hotham. Falls Creek has The Maze off the International Poma and Widow Maker as the headline — it's more technical than steep, and experienced riders won't be seriously tested. Hotham's Heavenly Valley has 17 advanced trails, The Wall of Death, the Extreme Zone off Gotcha Chair, and Snake Gully. By global standards these are still modest, but they're the best Australia has inside a lift-served network.
Falls Creek for beginners. Falls Creek for volume and consistency at intermediate level, Hotham if you want to be pushed. Hotham for advanced and expert, no argument.

Annual snowfall
Historical average - more snow generally means better powder and a longer season
Falls Creek averages 2.8 metres of annual snowfall. The resort's terrain is predominantly south-facing, which means limited direct sun exposure during winter - snow quality holds up well through the season, and the aspect protects conditions even into September when north-facing slopes elsewhere start to suffer. The snowmaking network covers approximately 30% of the skiable area, drawing water from Rocky Valley Lake, which sits in the valley below, reportedly the highest body of water in Australia.
Hotham averages 3 metres annually - the highest recorded precipitation of any Victorian resort over the past decade. The village elevation of 1,750 metres gives it a head start on natural snow reliability from early in the season. Snowmaking covers 38 hectares of key terrain. The mountain's orientation, with runs facing multiple aspects, means there's usually something in good shape regardless of which direction the weather's coming from.
Peak conditions at both resorts generally arrive in late July and through August. At Falls Creek, early September is worth considering if you're looking for reduced crowds and can still get good corn snow on the south-facing terrain. At Hotham, late August into early September is a well-regarded window - snow base is established, crowds thin out, and the spring surface softens in a way that's actually forgiving for building confidence.
Hotham has a slight edge on raw snowfall and summit elevation. Falls Creek benefits from superior aspect - that south-facing terrain holds snow quality well through the season. Neither should be your deciding factor. Both get enough snow to ski well.

Walk-up adult day ticket prices and season pass coverage
Pricing is identical across both resorts - adults are looking at between $186 and $233 depending on when you go, and a 3-day pass comes in around $622. Same rates, same structure at both mountains. Neither is cheap, but that's just the reality of Australian resort skiing. What does make a difference is how you buy - both resorts offer meaningful advance purchase discounts, so booking ahead rather than paying at the gate is the obvious move.
The more interesting conversation is the Epic Pass. Both Falls Creek and Hotham sit on the Epic Australia arrangement alongside Perisher, which means one pass covers all three resorts for the season, plus international access to places like Whistler Blackcomb, Vail, Hakuba, and Park City. The full Epic Australia Pass is around $999 if you buy early enough.
At $186 a day for a walk-up adult ticket, it pays for itself after five or six visits - and if you're planning to ski both resorts this winter, you're already halfway there. There's also a 4-Day Epic Australia Pass at $629 if a full season pass feels like too much commitment, which gives you four days to split however you like across the three resorts.
The progression angle is worth mentioning here too. The natural path for a lot of Victorian skiers is to learn at Falls Creek, then graduate to Hotham once you've got some runs under you. Having both on one pass makes that financially straightforward rather than a separate budgeting decision each time.
Pricing is identical at both resorts, so it's a non-factor in the decision. If you're skiing more than five or six days across the season, the Epic Australia Pass is the obvious move.
