Ski Descent From The Top Of Japan
Mt Fuji might just be the most well-known and possibly the most photographed mountain in the world. Every time we have been in Japan it’s the first sight we want to see and as we cruise past on the shinkansen our eyes are stuck staring out the window at the glory of the mountain.
One of our readers reached out to us with a short summary of a recent hike and ski descent of Japan’s tallest mountain.

At 3776m Mt. Fuji is the highest peak in Japan and offers incredible views reaching as far as Tokyo on a clear day. Climbing Mt. Fuji in the off-season is not as common and the season is short (mid-April to June).
The hike up from station 5 is about 1500m that will require crampons and ice axe for the majority of the climb. We were fortunate enough to catch it on a rare bluebird day and the hike only took about 7 hours to reach the summit where we stood alone and could take in views of the creator along with the surrounding prefectures and the 5 lakes below.
Our decent was about 1200m of the most remarkable views I’ve ever experienced on skis. Never in my life did I think I would ski above the clouds.
