    The Overview
    MF
    Michael Fulton
Melbourne-based skier and snowboarder with 50+ resorts across 5 continents. Specialises in Australian resorts and international resort comparisons.

Windham Mountain's summit reaches 3,100 feet, dropping 1,601 vertical feet to a base at 1,499 feet across 54 runs spread over 285 acres in the Catskill Mountains, roughly two and a half hours from New York City. Terrain splits 48 per cent intermediate, 20 per cent beginner, 19 per cent advanced and 13 per cent expert, with average annual snowfall of roughly 100 inches. Eleven lifts, including two quad chairs and one six-person chair, serve the mountain alongside one double chair, two triple chairs and five surface lifts.

Windham has cultivated a reputation as one of the Catskills' more upscale, family-oriented resorts, with substantial recent investment aimed at elevating the overall guest experience. The resort's proximity to New York City, combined with its premium positioning, has made it a popular choice for downstate visitors seeking a more refined mountain getaway.

New York's state assembly considered developing a state-run ski resort on the site, then known as Cave Mountain, in the late 1950s, but the project never advanced. Private investors instead purchased the land and opened Cave Mountain Ski Area in 1960, with ownership transferring to brothers Bob, James and Tom Sheridan three years later, who opened a lodge and introduced early snowmaking. In 1981, Irv Naylor, founder of Snow Time Inc., purchased the resort and renamed it Ski Windham, his third New York and Pennsylvania-area ski area alongside Ski Roundtop and Ski Liberty. The resort was renamed Windham Mountain in 2001.

In April 2023, Beall Investment Partners and Kemmons Wilson Hospitality Partners took majority ownership, with North Castle Partners, Cloverhill Group, and the McGuffog and Starker families remaining as existing partners. This new ownership group has pursued significant investment in the resort's facilities and guest amenities. Adult daily tickets run from 99 to 149 US dollars.

    When to visit Windham

The 2025-26 season at Windham Mountain ran from 28 November 2025 to 29 March 2026, a roughly eighteen-week season supported by average annual snowfall of around 100 inches. Extensive snowmaking supplements natural snowfall to support the resort's early opening and consistent conditions throughout the season.

Midwinter, from December through February, typically brings the most consistent conditions to Windham's intermediate-weighted terrain. Given the resort's roughly two-and-a-half-hour drive from New York City and its premium, family-oriented positioning, Windham draws substantial weekend and holiday visitation from the downstate metropolitan area throughout the season.

Following the April 2023 ownership change, the resort has pursued significant guest-experience investment, an approach that continues to shape its seasonal operations and positioning relative to other Catskills resorts. School holiday periods bring substantial family visitation given the resort's varied terrain and upscale amenities.

Specific event programming beyond standard operations is not confirmed in available resort information. Since the resort's renaming from Ski Windham to Windham Mountain in 2001, and its subsequent 2023 ownership transition, the mountain has continued building on more than six decades of Catskills skiing history dating to its 1960 origins as Cave Mountain Ski Area. Windham's premium, family-focused character remains central to its seasonal identity.

    Getting there

Getting to Windham, and where to stay

Windham Mountain sits in the Catskill Mountains of New York, roughly two and a half hours from New York City, with a base elevation of 1,499 feet and a summit at 3,100 feet across a 1,601-foot vertical drop over 285 acres. This proximity to the metropolitan area has long supported Windham's role as a leading downstate ski destination.

The village of Windham and the broader northern Catskills region offer lodging, dining and additional recreation within a short drive of the resort. The Hudson Valley lies between the mountain and New York City, providing further stopover options for visitors making the drive from the metropolitan area.

New York State Route 23 provides direct access to the resort through the northern Catskills. Winter driving conditions on this route can include snow and ice, and visitors travelling from the New York City area should allow extra time given typical weekend traffic volumes. There is no direct public transport service to the mountain, though its proximity to the city supports considerable day-trip and weekend visitation by car.

Specific nearest commercial airport details are not confirmed in available resort information, though Windham's roughly two-and-a-half-hour drive from New York City places it within reach of the metropolitan area's major airports for visitors flying in from further afield.

Thredbo Is 'On the Table' as EVT Reviews Its Whole Business

Thredbo is officially 'on the table.' EVT Limited, owner of Australia's most decorated ski resort, has hired Rothschild & Co to review its entire corporate structure - and confirmed Thredbo isn't off limits, even as it books a stronger year of earnings. The resort's own valuation has nearly halved after a brutal 2026 season, and speculation is already running toward Vail Resorts, Alterra, or a New Zealand operator picking it up. Here's what EVT actually said, and who could buy it.

Ski-E-O! Is the Ski Resort Tycoon Game We Didn't Know We Needed

I'm not a gamer. I'm a skier and snowboarder who happens to have a laptop. So when a ski resort management game called Ski-E-O! landed on Steam, I wasn't expecting to lose an afternoon to it - but here we are. Real mountain terrain, a full weather system, storms that roll in and wreck your snow base, avalanche danger, and enough depth to make RollerCoaster Tycoon feel simple by comparison. Early access lands in November. Here's what a few hours in the free demo actually looks like.

Sugar Bowl, California, Rebuilds Its Historic Village Gondola

The rumours are true: Sugar Bowl is tearing out its Emerald gondola, in place since 1983, and replacing it with a new 8-person Doppelmayr system - nearly doubling uphill capacity to 1,800 people an hour. It's the fourth generation of a gondola line that dates back to 1953, when Sugar Bowl became the first resort on the West Coast to run one at all, and it's just one piece of a $100 million overhaul touching lodges, parking and snowmaking. Here's what's changing, and what's staying the same.

Two Confirmed Dead as Search Continues After Swiss Alps Fire

The death toll from Thursday night's fire at Restaurant Beverin in Thusis, Switzerland, has begun to firm up. One Swiss outlet, citing Graubünden Cantonal Police, reports that two of the five people initially reported missing have now been confirmed dead, leaving three unaccounted for. The building's collapsed stairwell and structural instability have slowed recovery efforts throughout. Here's what's changed since the fire broke out, and what's still unconfirmed.

Selwyn Snow Resort Closes Early as Rain Ends Its 2026 Season

Selwyn Snow Resort has called an early end to its 2026 season, a day after Victoria's Mount Baw Baw did the same. Rain on Thursday stripped what was left of the snowpack, and the cold nights needed to rebuild it through snowmaking never arrived. It's a rough result for a resort that only just found its footing again after being burned to the ground in the 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires and a multi-year rebuild. Here's how the season fell apart, and where Selwyn's been since the fire.

Mt Baw Baw Becomes First Australian Resort to Close for 2026

Mt Baw Baw is calling time on its 2026 season this Sunday at 5pm, becoming the first Australian resort to close for the year after warm spells and rain wore through its snowpack. Lifts stop, but the resort stays open, entry fees get waived, and there's one last Bollywood Weekend before the lights go out. Fifty-seven days after opening, here's how the season ended and what it means for the rest of Australia's struggling snowpack.

Arosa to Replace 40-Year-Old Hörnli Lifts With New Gondola and Chair

Arosa's Hörnli sector is getting its biggest overhaul in decades. The 1986 gondola and 1994 chairlift linking toward Lenzerheide are both being replaced, with capacity up, tower count down and a new base station lower on the hill. At roughly CHF 67 million, it is the largest single investment Arosa Bergbahnen has ever made - and the target opening has already slipped a year, to December 2028. Here is what is changing, and why the timeline moved.

Sundance Mountain Resort Is Getting a New High-Speed Quad and More Back Mountain Terrain This Winter

Sundance Mountain Resort's back mountain is finally getting a proper lift. The Electric Horseman Express opens for 2026-27, unlocking a new bowl next to Bishop's Bowl and three expert gladed chutes across roughly 105 fresh acres - on top of the Storyteller ridge run that debuted in preview form last season. It's Sundance's biggest expansion since 1985, and it turns a three-lift slog into a single six-minute ride to Bearclaw Summit.

    Understanding the Windham snow report

Windham snow conditions, updated regularly: current snowfall, snow depth, temperatures, and the outlook for this New York resort on the Ikon.

    Snow measurements

Base depth, summit depth, and recent snowfall are the core numbers to watch. At Windham, summit conditions (945m) can differ noticeably from the base, so we break both out separately rather than showing a single average.

    Weather conditions

Snow quality tracks closely with temperature and wind. We surface both alongside the snowfall data so you can judge whether conditions at Windham are holding up or starting to soften.

    Data sources

We pull Windham's conditions from on-the-ground mountain reporting, then layer in forecast data so you get a fuller picture than either source alone. The mountain is served by 11 lifts, including 2 quad chairlifts and a 6-person chairlift.

    When to check

Snow reports are typically updated early morning and late afternoon. For the most current conditions, check back regularly, especially if a winter storm is approaching.
