Late-Season Skiing Opportunities in Europe

As April comes to a close, many ski resorts across Europe have ended their winter seasons. However, some high-altitude destinations continue to offer skiing into May and beyond. This extended season provides opportunities for skiers and riders to enjoy the slopes well into spring, with some resorts boasting excellent snow conditions at higher elevations.

While popular resorts in France, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy have closed, several remain open. In France, Les Arcs, La Plagne, Chamonix, and La Clusaz continue operations into early May. Swiss resorts Verbier and Saas-Fee also extend their seasons. Some resorts push even further, with Tignes, Les Deux Alpes, and Val Thorens in France staying open until 4 May.

Austria offers late-season options as well, with Ischgl and Pitztal open until 4 May, Stubai until 11 May, and both Kitzsteinhorn and Kuenertall until 18 May. In Switzerland, Engelberg continues until 4 May, while Italy's Val Senales and Cervinia also remain open until the same date.

Snow conditions vary, but higher altitudes in the western Alps have seen impressive coverage for mid-to-late April. However, skiers should expect spring conditions, with firm snow primarily on high north-facing slopes. The recent snowstorm brought significant snowfall, but the quality can deteriorate quickly due to strong sun and warmer temperatures.

For those looking to ski even later in the year, Les Deux Alpes plans to offer summer skiing from late May to early July on its glacier, with a vertical drop of 400 metres at the highest elevations. Val d'Isère and Tignes also have plans for summer skiing in June and July, weather permitting. These extended seasons provide unique opportunities for skiers and riders to enjoy snow sports well into the warmer months, though conditions can be unpredictable and terrain limited compared to peak winter months.
