Italy's Passo Stelvio Offers Summer Skiing from May 31

Passo Stelvio, a unique ski resort in Italy's Bormio area, is preparing for its summer season. The resort, situated on the Stelvio Glacier, will open from May 31 to November 2, 2025. It's one of only six ski resorts worldwide that operate exclusively during summer months, providing the largest skiable area in the Alps during this period. The resort's opening depends on the clearance of snow from the Stelvio Pass road, which is scheduled to open on May 23 at 1:00 p.m.

The ski area is located in Stelvio National Park, surrounded by the Ortles-Cevedale mountain range. It offers 20 kilometres of slopes suitable for various skill levels, from beginners to advanced skiers. The resort's infrastructure includes modern cable cars and ski lifts, servicing terrain that starts at 2,758 metres at the Stelvio Pass and reaches up to 3,450 metres on Mount Cristallo. Notably, the iconic Stelvio Pass road celebrates its 200th anniversary this year.

Passo Stelvio caters to different types of skiers. Advanced skiers can enjoy the significant vertical drop and challenging terrain, while beginners can take lessons from Bormio's ski schools. The glacier also provides routes for ski mountaineering enthusiasts.

The resort has gained a reputation as a training ground for elite ski athletes. Olympic champion Sofia Goggia used these slopes for her comeback after a knee injury, leading to her subsequent victories. Many top-level and youth-category athletes are expected to train here, as Bormio prepares to host Alpine Skiing and Ski Mountaineering events for the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games.

Passo Stelvio's lift schedule is designed to make the most of snow conditions and enhance the skiing experience. The resort's unique summer skiing opportunity allows skiers and riders to enjoy the sport in a different season, with the added benefit of stunning alpine scenery. As one of the few places offering this experience, Passo Stelvio continues to attract both recreational skiers and professional athletes looking to extend their ski season into the summer months.
