Swiss Alps Set for Major Ski Resort Connection

A new project proposes to connect two major Swiss ski resorts, Airolo and Andermatt, with a 16-kilometre gondola system across the St. Gotthard Pass. This plan, put forward by the regional committee Porta Gottardo, aims to boost tourism and economic development in the area. The project would link the German-speaking Uri canton with the Italian-speaking Ticino canton, creating a unified ski and tourism region.

The proposed gondola would consist of three segments, starting from Airolo-Pesciüm, crossing the Gotthard Pass, and ending at Gemsstock in the Andermatt-Sedrun-Disentis ski area. This connection would open up new terrain for skiers and riders, including areas on the Gotthard Pass that are currently only accessible to backcountry enthusiasts. The project planners have taken care to avoid ecologically sensitive areas in their proposed route.

While Andermatt has seen significant development in recent years, including investment from Vail Resorts, Airolo has remained less developed, particularly in winter. This new connection could help balance visitor numbers between the two resorts and create new opportunities for year-round tourism.

The next step for the project is a feasibility study, which will assess its economic, logistical, and environmental impacts. Porta Gottardo also plans to engage with local communities and stakeholders to gather feedback on the proposal. Funding for the project is yet to be secured, with a mix of public and private investment likely to be sought.

If realised, this gondola system could significantly change the landscape of skiing in the Swiss Alps. Airolo, located in Ticino, offers a variety of slopes suitable for different skill levels, while Andermatt, in Uri, is known for its challenging terrain and extensive off-piste opportunities. The connection would create a diverse ski area appealing to a wide range of skiers and riders, potentially establishing the Gotthard region as a major player in Alpine tourism.
