Obereggen sits at the foot of the Latemar massif in the Val d'Ega in South Tyrol, part of the Ski Center Latemar - a connected ski area spanning 49km of pistes across three access points: Obereggen, Pampeago and Predazzo. Terrain runs from 1,540m to 2,388m, with 67% of runs graded red and open piste across the upper mountain transitioning to forested descents lower down. The Latemar massif, rising directly above the ski area, is part of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Ski Center Latemar has been ranked the world's best ski area in its size category by skiresort.info, which has awarded it 17 separate quality designations - including the top ranking for slope grooming across all European resorts. The area averages 86 sunny days per season, above the Italian average, and carries 100% snowmaking coverage across all marked runs, described by the resort as one of the most modern systems in Europe.
On-mountain highlights include the Latemar Sixpack - six consecutive steep descents with gradients of up to 60% - and the Pala di Santa, the area's steepest black run. The Skimovie Piste 8 (Toler) runs two parallel timed tracks for those wanting a speed reference. Night skiing operates twice weekly from 7pm to 10pm on a floodlit 1,780m piste, and the Snowpark Obereggen - maintained three times weekly by the F-Tech crew - includes kickers, boxes, rails, a half-pipe and a dedicated Night Park.
A Val di Fiemme-Obereggen area pass extends access to 111km across five ski areas including Alpe Cermis and Alpe Lusia, linked by a free ski bus. Obereggen also sits within the Dolomiti Superski network, which covers 1,200km of piste across 12 interconnected areas in the broader Dolomites region.

When to visit Obereggen
Obereggen operates from late November through to late April, with the 2025-26 season running from 29 November 2025 to 21 April 2026 - one of the longer guaranteed seasons among South Tyrolean resorts outside of glacier areas. The extended closing date reflects the combination of altitude, northerly aspect on the upper mountain and the full snowmaking coverage that keeps conditions reliable through the spring period.
Annual snowfall averages 3.5 metres, and the resort's position within the Latemar bowl provides good natural snow retention through the core winter months. Average snow depth at the summit during February - typically the deepest month - runs to around 1 metre, with the base holding close to 65cm. December is the sunniest month of the season with around 20 clear days on average.
The season's shoulder months are actively programmed. Opening week in late November draws early-season visitors to the freshly groomed pistes before the broader Dolomites crowd arrives, while the spring period through March and April benefits from firm morning snow and long daylight hours on a predominantly south-east-facing ski area. Night skiing on Tuesdays and Fridays provides a distinct evening session option unavailable at most comparable South Tyrolean areas.
The Obereggen Snowpark season runs in parallel with the main ski area, with the pipe shaped and maintained through to closing day and the Night Park open on the same evenings as the floodlit slope. The Alpine Coaster Gardonè - Trentino's only rail toboggan run - operates alongside the ski area and provides an additional activity for non-ski days.

Getting there
Getting to Obereggen, and where to stay
Obereggen sits in the Val d'Ega in the Nova Ponente municipality of South Tyrol, reached via the SS241 Eggental road from the A22 Brenner motorway. From the Bolzano Nord motorway exit, the resort is approximately 25 minutes by road - making it one of the most accessible ski areas in the Dolomites relative to a major city. Bolzano is the closest urban centre with full services, rail connections and the nearest regional airport.
The nearest international airport is Bolzano Airport, around 30km to the north-west. For visitors flying into larger hubs, Verona Villafranca Airport is approximately 130km to the south via the A22, and Innsbruck Airport in Austria is around 90km to the north across the Brenner Pass. Driving from Munich is around 2.5 hours via the A13 and A22.
Public transport access runs via train to Bolzano, from where the Val d'Ega bus service connects to Obereggen. The journey from Bolzano train station to the ski area by bus takes around 45 minutes. A dedicated ski bus network also connects Obereggen to the other areas under the Val di Fiemme-Obereggen pass, running on a regular timetable throughout the ski season.
The village of Obereggen itself is compact and purpose-built around the ski area, with accommodation, ski hire and ski school facilities clustered at the gondola base. The adjacent Val d'Ega valley town of Eggen/Nova Levante provides a broader range of accommodation and restaurants within a short drive of the lifts.

FIS Weighs Holding World Championships in Almost Every Winter, Starting 2032
The International Ski and Snowboard Federation is looking at a major shake-up to its title events calendar. From 2032, World Championships could run not just in odd-numbered years but in every non-Olympic winter too, effectively putting a global title event on the calendar almost every season. The FIS Council has approved the concept following a feasibility study, though an accelerated rollout as early as 2028 is also under consideration.

Mount Buller Becomes Latest Australian Resort to Call Time Early on 2026
Mount Buller closes out its 2026 season this Sunday, joining Falls Creek, Hotham and Charlotte Pass in a cluster of closures landing almost simultaneously and roughly a month ahead of schedule. The culprit is stark: Spencers Creek's benchmark snow depth hit 31.2cm on 3 September, just 18% of the 73-year average and an all-time low for this point in the season. Six of Victoria and NSW's best-known resorts will have shut their lifts early within a span of about two and a half weeks.

Tremblant to Add New Timber Summit Ski Sector for 2027/28 Season
Tremblant has confirmed a major expansion of its Quebec ski area, with a new Timber Summit sector adding 62 acres of terrain, eight trails and a high-speed quad chairlift for winter 2027/28. It's part of a CAD 42.5 million investment that also includes a new beginner learning zone at Versant Soleil opening this coming season. The project has grown considerably since it was first announced back in 2020, when it carried a far smaller budget and an opening date that never eventuated.

Mount Hotham to Close for the 2026 Season on Sunday, September 6
We knew when the Bird Bath Pond Skim showed up on Hotham's Instagram that the season was on its way out. It's been a rough one - I only managed two days on snow all year, at Falls Creek - and now Baw Baw, Selwyn and Hotham have all called it, possibly the worst Australian season I've seen in a decade. Hotham's last day of lift operations is Sunday, 6 September, with a Retro Day, Father's Day après and closing sales before the lifts stop turning for good.

Thredbo to Replace Ageing Gunbarrel Quad With New Six-Seat Chairlift for 2028
Thredbo Alpine Resort has confirmed plans to replace its 37-year-old Gunbarrel quad chairlift with a new six-seat Doppelmayr D-Line, targeting winter 2028. The AUD 35 million project will keep travel time roughly the same but lift capacity from 2,800 to 3,000 skiers per hour. It's part of a broader investment push that also includes doubled snowmaking capacity at Friday Flat for 2027, with the ageing Kosciuszko Express now flagged as the resort's next major lift replacement after Gunbarrel.

Aerial Tram Collides With Crane at Alpe d'Huez: 23 Injured
An aerial tram carrying around fifty passengers struck the boom of a construction crane on the route to Pic Blanc at Alpe d'Huez on Wednesday morning, injuring 23 people, three seriously. The cabin tipped on impact before the operator reversed it to right the car. Most of the injured were treated on site, with five taken to hospital in Grenoble, including a pregnant woman assessed as a precaution.

Pitztal Glacier Set to Reopen for the 2026/27 Ski Season on 26 September
Tyrol's highest ski area is gearing up to open a full month ahead of most of the Alps. The Pitztal Glacier is scheduled to start its 2026/27 season on Saturday 26 September, running through to 2 May 2027, with the lower-altitude Rifflsee area following in December. High-altitude terrain up to 3,440 metres gives the glacier a head start on snow, though as always, the actual opening extent will depend on how September's weather plays out. Early online ski pass bookings can save up to 30%.
