Paganella sits on the Altopiano della Paganella in Trentino, above the village of Andalo and backed by the Brenta Dolomites - a UNESCO World Heritage massif that forms the western horizon from the upper mountain. The ski area spans 1,040m to 2,125m across 50km of pistes, with runs descending 1,100m of vertical on two faces of the Cima Paganella summit and returning to both Andalo and Fai della Paganella.
The terrain runs heavily intermediate, with 19 red pistes making up the bulk of the ski area alongside 11 blue runs and a single black - the Pala di Santa. Named pistes with established reputations include the 3-Tre, a race-format slope with FIS history, and the Olimpionica 2, which serves as the official European training base for the Norwegian National Alpine Ski Team and has also been used by the USA men's alpine squad. The endorsement from national teams is reflected in the quality of grooming, which the resort maintains as a signature standard across the area.
From the Cima Paganella summit at 2,125m, on a clear day the panorama takes in the Marmolada glacier to the east, the Brenta Dolomites to the west, and Lake Garda to the south - one of the more unusual viewpoints in the Trentino ski area network. Snow coverage across 100% of marked pistes is maintained by an extensive snowmaking system, critical for a south-facing area at relatively moderate altitude.
The Paganella ski pass connects into the Skirama Dolomiti Adamello Brenta carousel, which covers 380km of slopes across eight areas including Madonna di Campiglio, Pinzolo, Folgarida-Marilleva, Passo Tonale and Monte Bondone - all accessible under a single Superskirama pass.

When to visit Paganella - Andalo
Paganella operates from early December through to late March, with the 2025-26 season running from 6 December 2025 to 30 March 2026. The season window is shorter than glacier-adjacent areas in the region, reflecting the resort's moderate summit altitude of 2,125m and predominantly south-facing aspect. Snowmaking covers 100% of marked pistes and is the primary mechanism keeping the area operational through the full season.
Annual snowfall averages 3.5 metres, with December typically the sunniest month and February delivering the deepest base. The south-facing slopes on the Andalo side benefit from morning sun and firm early conditions, while the Fai della Paganella face holds cooler temperatures and tends to preserve snow quality longer into the day. Cross-country tracks running around Andalo lake and into the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park supplement the ski area on days when conditions favour Nordic skiing.
The Paganella plateau setting - at around 1,000m before the ski area begins - means the resort villages of Andalo and Fai della Paganella sit above the valley fog that can affect lower Trentino towns during winter high-pressure periods. Night skiing on Tuesdays and Fridays adds evening programming that extends the usable ski day beyond standard afternoon close.
Proximity to Trento - around 30-40 minutes by road - means Paganella draws a strong weekend crowd from the city and surrounding valley towns. Weekday visits offer uncrowded conditions on the same pistes that the Norwegian national squad has used for European training preparation since 2011.

Getting to Paganella - Andalo, and where to stay
Paganella sits on the Altopiano della Paganella plateau in Trentino, accessed from the A22 Brenner motorway via the San Michele all'Adige exit. From the motorway, the resort is approximately 20 minutes by road to the Andalo base station - one of the most straightforward approach drives of any Trentino ski area. Andalo is around 35km north of Trento and 30km from the Brenner motorway's main north-south corridor.
The nearest international airports are Verona Villafranca to the south, around 130km via the A22, and Innsbruck in Austria to the north, around 100km across the Brenner Pass. Both offer direct motorway access to the San Michele exit. Bolzano Airport, smaller and with limited connections, sits around 45km to the north-east.
Trento is the primary rail hub for the area, served by frequent Trenitalia services on the Verona-Innsbruck Brenner line. From Trento station, bus services run to Andalo throughout the ski season, with the journey taking around 50 minutes. A local ski bus network links Andalo, Fai della Paganella, Molveno and surrounding plateau villages throughout the winter.
Andalo is a purpose-built resort town of around 1,000 permanent residents with a compact centre, hotels, apartments and direct ski-in access from the main gondola base. Fai della Paganella, 6km to the west at similar altitude, is a smaller and quieter base with access to the western side of the ski area. Both villages sit within the boundaries of the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park, giving the broader area a protected landscape character that extends into summer hiking and via ferrata use.

Mount Buller Becomes Latest Australian Resort to Call Time Early on 2026
Mount Buller closes out its 2026 season this Sunday, joining Falls Creek, Hotham and Charlotte Pass in a cluster of closures landing almost simultaneously and roughly a month ahead of schedule. The culprit is stark: Spencers Creek's benchmark snow depth hit 31.2cm on 3 September, just 18% of the 73-year average and an all-time low for this point in the season. Six of Victoria and NSW's best-known resorts will have shut their lifts early within a span of about two and a half weeks.

Tremblant to Add New Timber Summit Ski Sector for 2027/28 Season
Tremblant has confirmed a major expansion of its Quebec ski area, with a new Timber Summit sector adding 62 acres of terrain, eight trails and a high-speed quad chairlift for winter 2027/28. It's part of a CAD 42.5 million investment that also includes a new beginner learning zone at Versant Soleil opening this coming season. The project has grown considerably since it was first announced back in 2020, when it carried a far smaller budget and an opening date that never eventuated.

Mount Hotham to Close for the 2026 Season on Sunday, September 6
We knew when the Bird Bath Pond Skim showed up on Hotham's Instagram that the season was on its way out. It's been a rough one - I only managed two days on snow all year, at Falls Creek - and now Baw Baw, Selwyn and Hotham have all called it, possibly the worst Australian season I've seen in a decade. Hotham's last day of lift operations is Sunday, 6 September, with a Retro Day, Father's Day après and closing sales before the lifts stop turning for good.

Thredbo to Replace Ageing Gunbarrel Quad With New Six-Seat Chairlift for 2028
Thredbo Alpine Resort has confirmed plans to replace its 37-year-old Gunbarrel quad chairlift with a new six-seat Doppelmayr D-Line, targeting winter 2028. The AUD 35 million project will keep travel time roughly the same but lift capacity from 2,800 to 3,000 skiers per hour. It's part of a broader investment push that also includes doubled snowmaking capacity at Friday Flat for 2027, with the ageing Kosciuszko Express now flagged as the resort's next major lift replacement after Gunbarrel.

Aerial Tram Collides With Crane at Alpe d'Huez: 23 Injured
An aerial tram carrying around fifty passengers struck the boom of a construction crane on the route to Pic Blanc at Alpe d'Huez on Wednesday morning, injuring 23 people, three seriously. The cabin tipped on impact before the operator reversed it to right the car. Most of the injured were treated on site, with five taken to hospital in Grenoble, including a pregnant woman assessed as a precaution.

Pitztal Glacier Set to Reopen for the 2026/27 Ski Season on 26 September
Tyrol's highest ski area is gearing up to open a full month ahead of most of the Alps. The Pitztal Glacier is scheduled to start its 2026/27 season on Saturday 26 September, running through to 2 May 2027, with the lower-altitude Rifflsee area following in December. High-altitude terrain up to 3,440 metres gives the glacier a head start on snow, though as always, the actual opening extent will depend on how September's weather plays out. Early online ski pass bookings can save up to 30%.

Unstable Glacier Above Randa Puts Zermatt-Area Village on Alert
A hanging glacier above the Swiss village of Randa, just south of Zermatt, has been shedding large chunks of ice for weeks, with authorities warning more break-offs are likely. A danger zone has been closed off since June, though officials say the village's 479 residents aren't at risk. It's a familiar pattern for this glacier - it's done this before, in 1819, 1972 and 1973 - but a reminder of how closely Alpine authorities now watch terrain once considered stable.

Paganella - Andalo Lift System
Seventeen lifts serve Paganella's terrain between 1,040m and 2,125m, with the JSON-recorded installations comprising four gondolas, two eight-seat chairlifts, nine quad chairlifts and two double chairlifts - supplemented by five magic carpet conveyors across the resort's four dedicated beginner and children's areas. Combined uphill capacity sits at 31,000 people per hour across the full network.
The main valley access from Andalo is the Andalo-Doss Pelà gondola, an eight-seat installation with a mid-station at 1,456m (Dosson) that also serves the snowpark and the night skiing session. The Laghet-Prati di Gaggia gondola provides a second Andalo entry point oriented toward the beginner terrain at Prati di Gaggia, while the Santel gondola accesses the ski area from Fai della Paganella on the western flank.
Night skiing operates on the Cacciatori 1 piste on Tuesdays and Fridays from 7:30pm to 10:30pm, accessed by the Andalo-Doss Pelà gondola running to the Dosson mid-station. The snowpark - also reached at the Dosson mid-station - is divided into two zones: an easy area with a Funslope and interactive obstacles, and an advanced section with S and M kickers and six rail features.
The four beginner zones are distributed across both Andalo and Fai della Paganella, each equipped with dedicated carpet lifts and short chairlifts that operate independently of the main mountain. Over 200 ski instructors across multiple schools service both villages, making Paganella one of the more densely staffed ski teaching operations in Trentino.
