TL;DR
Mt Hutt is getting busier, and its base lodge is about to catch up. NZ$12 million goes into a heated sun deck roughly three times the current size (430 m² to 1,300 m²), plus a new toilet block, heated steps down to snow level, extra storage and a new food and beverage outlet. Building starts after the 2026 season, with everything due for winter 2027.
Mt Hutt has been getting busier every year, and its base lodge is about to catch up.
The New Zealand ski area is putting NZ$12 million into its base building, with construction due to start once the 2026 winter season finishes. The work is scheduled to be complete before winter 2027.
A heated sun deck about three times the size
The biggest change at Mt Hutt is outdoors. The sun deck grows from 430 m² to 1,300 m² and will be fully heated, which makes it roughly triple its current footprint.

What else is in the build
The project adds a new ground-floor toilet block and extra storage for guests and staff. Improved heated steps will lead down from the base building to snow level. There’s also an additional food and beverage outlet, though the resort is holding back details and says it will share more over summer.
Why now
Ski Area Manager James McKenzie says the aim is more space and better function in the base area. The existing lodge works well operationally, he says, but it has hit the point where more room and seating will “make a real difference” on bluebird days after new snow, when everyone wants to be up the mountain.
Mt Hutt has become steadily busier over time, McKenzie says, and the investment is meant to match the base facilities to that growth. He describes it as a foundation for continued growth in line with future demand.
Timing and contractor
Ashburton’s Bradfords Building has been selected as principal contractor. Construction begins after the 2026 winter season, and the resort says completion is planned ahead of winter 2027.
About Mt Hutt
Mt Hutt is a ski area on New Zealand’s South Island, and the base building is where most visitors start and finish the day. Management says the mountain has become steadily busier over time. The NZ$12 million project is the resort’s response, matching its base facilities to that growth. It adds a heated sun deck of roughly 1,300 m², a new food and beverage outlet, a ground-floor toilet block, heated steps to snow level and extra storage.
