    The Overview
    MF
    Michael Fulton
Melbourne-based skier and snowboarder with 50+ resorts across 5 continents. Specialises in Australian resorts and international resort comparisons.

Telluride's summit reaches 13,150 feet, dropping 4,425 vertical feet to a base at 8,725 feet across 148 runs spread over 2,000 acres in Telluride, Colorado. Terrain splits 39 per cent expert, 23 per cent each for advanced and intermediate, and 15 per cent beginner, with average annual snowfall of roughly 300 inches. Nineteen lifts, including six quad chairs and one gondola, serve the mountain alongside four six-person chairs, three double chairs, one triple chair and four surface lifts.

Telluride holds a genuinely distinctive place among Colorado resorts, combining a National Historic Landmark Victorian mining town with some of the state's most dramatic, expert-weighted terrain and a free public gondola connecting the historic town to the newer Mountain Village. Its considerable 4,425-foot vertical drop ranks among the largest in Colorado.

Telluride was founded in 1878 during the San Juan Mountains' silver and gold mining boom, and the town's name is popularly said to derive from tellurium, though it more likely stems from a corruption of 'to-hell-you-ride,' reflecting the area's rugged remoteness. Mining sustained the town for decades before its decline in the early twentieth century.

Telluride Ski Resort opened in 1972, developed by Joseph T. Zoline on the mountain above the historic town, bringing renewed prosperity to a community that had fallen into decline. The resort has remained under a series of private ownership groups, with the free gondola, opened in 1996, connecting the historic town to the purpose-built Mountain Village. Adult daily tickets run from 169 to 249 US dollars.

    When to visit Telluride

The 2025-26 season at Telluride ran from 27 November 2025 to 12 April 2026, a roughly nineteen-week season supported by average annual snowfall of around 300 inches. Season dates can shift depending on early and late-season weather conditions in the San Juan Mountains.

Midwinter, from December through February, typically brings the most consistent conditions to Telluride's dramatic, expert-weighted terrain. Telluride draws a genuinely dedicated destination visitor base seeking the resort's considerable vertical drop and historic Victorian mining town setting, well away from the Interstate 70 corridor.

Telluride's free gondola continues to support strong visitation between the historic town and Mountain Village throughout the season. School holiday periods bring family visitation to the resort's more moderate terrain, though the overall visitor base skews toward experienced skiers drawn by the considerable expert terrain.

Specific event programming beyond standard operations is not confirmed in available resort information. Telluride continues to build on more than five decades of skiing history since its 1972 founding, itself following a century of mining heritage dating to the town's 1878 founding. The resort's Victorian town character and dramatic terrain remain central to its enduring destination appeal.

    Getting there

Getting to Telluride, and where to stay

Telluride sits in Telluride, Colorado, in the San Juan Mountains, with a base elevation of 8,725 feet and a summit at 13,150 feet across a 4,425-foot vertical drop over 2,000 acres. This dramatic, remote setting places the resort in one of Colorado's most historically significant and visually striking mountain towns.

The town of Telluride itself, a National Historic Landmark Victorian mining town, offers extensive lodging, dining and considerable historic character directly at the resort's base, connected by free gondola to the newer Mountain Village.

Colorado State Highway 145 provides access to the resort. Winter driving conditions on this remote mountain route can include significant snow and ice, and the resort's considerable distance from major population centres means travellers should allow additional time compared with more centrally located Colorado destinations.

Telluride Regional Airport, one of the highest commercial airports in North America, offers direct seasonal flights from several major US cities, providing a genuinely convenient gateway for visitors flying directly into this otherwise remote destination, alongside the more distant Montrose Regional Airport.

Sundance Mountain Resort Is Getting a New High-Speed Quad and More Back Mountain Terrain This Winter

Sundance Mountain Resort Is Getting a New High-Speed Quad and More Back Mountain Terrain This Winter

Sundance Mountain Resort's back mountain is finally getting a proper lift. The Electric Horseman Express opens for 2026-27, unlocking a new bowl next to Bishop's Bowl and three expert gladed chutes across roughly 105 fresh acres - on top of the Storyteller ridge run that debuted in preview form last season. It's Sundance's biggest expansion since 1985, and it turns a three-lift slog into a single six-minute ride to Bearclaw Summit.

Nassfeld Invests €13 Million in New 6-Seater Chairlift for 2026/27 Season

Nassfeld is putting €13 million into a new 6-seater chairlift, the Tressdorfer Almbahn, connecting Sonnleitn with the Tressdorfer Alm from December 2026. It replaces three ageing drag lifts and will run through summer too, from June 2027, moving up to 2,500 people an hour on the roughly three-minute ride. It's the latest step in Carinthia's largest ski resort building out a genuine year-round offering, following last year's Gartnerkofelbahn gondola.

Stelvio Glacier Suspends Summer Skiing, Leaving Continental Europe Without a Lift-Served Slope

Stelvio Glacier Suspends Summer Skiing, Leaving Continental Europe Without a Lift-Served Slope

Italy's Stelvio Glacier has pulled the plug on summer skiing from August 15. It was the last lift-served ski option left standing in continental Europe, and now there's none. Operator SIFAS pointed to persistent heat, storms, and a snowpack that simply wasn't refreezing overnight anymore. The cable car keeps running. Whether skiing comes back later this summer depends on the weather turning - and right now, nobody's promising anything.

Maverick Mountain's Only Chairlift Destroyed as Sand Creek Fire Tears Through Montana Ski Area

Maverick Mountain's Only Chairlift Destroyed as Sand Creek Fire Tears Through Montana Ski Area

Firefighters saved every base building at Maverick Mountain, Montana, but the resort's sole chairlift didn't survive the Sand Creek Fire. Owners Erik and Kristi Borge say the lift is "most likely" out for the 2026/27 season after flames tore through the mountain on August 8. The wildfire has since grown past 27,700 acres with zero percent containment. It's a gutting result for the tiny, one-lift operation near Dillon - though the lodge, groomers and equipment all made it through untouched.

Fairmont Niseko: New Luxury Resort Revives Stalled La Plume Site for Early 2028 Opening

Fairmont is bringing its second Japanese property to Niseko, and this one's got history. The 165-room resort will rise on the site of the stalled La Plume project, which collapsed into bankruptcy in 2025 before J-Will Partners bought the site for redevelopment. Set between Mount Yotei and Mount Annupuri, it's slated for an early 2028 opening - putting it in play for the 2027/28 season. Expect two restaurants, a spa, onsen bathing, and a kids' club, a short drive from Niseko Village and Hirafu.

Saas-Fee Closes Its Glacier to Summer Skiing as Heat Wave Drags On

Saas-Fee Closes Its Glacier to Summer Skiing as Heat Wave Drags On

Saas-Fee is closing its glacier to summer skiing from Monday, August 10 - the second major Swiss resort to shut in under two weeks after Zermatt suspended operations on August 1. Persistent heat and warm nights that won't let the glacier refreeze are behind the call, per Saastal Bergbahnen. That leaves Italy's Stelvio as the only glacier ski area open in the Alps. Reopening could come as early as August 17, though nothing's confirmed - and racing teams are already looking south instead.

Silvretta Montafon Plans New 10-Person Gondola to Replace Ageing Hochjoch Lift

Silvretta Montafon Plans New 10-Person Gondola to Replace Ageing Hochjoch Lift

Silvretta Montafon wants to retire one of its most distinctive lifts. The plan: a single 10-person gondola running direct from Schruns to 1,870 metres, replacing both the two-stage Hochjoch cable car and the 1985 Kropfen chairlift in one move. Capacity jumps from 620 to 3,000 people an hour, and the mid-station transfer disappears entirely. The public hearing lands August 27, 2026 - construction hasn't been confirmed yet, though lift databases are pointing to 2027.

Dolomiti Superski's general assembly has unanimously re-elected Andy Varallo for a third consecutive term, running through 2029. Alongside the leadership renewal comes a bigger shift: a Smartpass that puts your ski pass on your smartphone, more AI in guest services, and an expanded Dolomiti Supersummer program. The 46-year-old Alta Badia cable car entrepreneur says the region's marketing is moving beyond skiing alone, toward positioning the Dolomites as a year-round destination.

    Understanding the Telluride snow report

Telluride snow conditions, updated regularly: current snowfall, snow depth, temperatures, and the outlook for this Colorado resort on the Epic.

    Snow measurements

Our snow reports measure snowfall in centimeters over multiple time windows — last 24 hours, last 7 days, and the season total. Base depth reflects accumulation at the 2659m base area, while summit depth captures conditions 1155m higher at 3814m, where snow typically stays colder and lingers longer. Imperial conversions are shown alongside for convenience.

    Weather conditions

Wind and temperature swings matter as much as fresh snowfall. Cold, calm conditions hold snow quality well, while wind-loading or a warm-up can change things quickly — especially given the elevation spread between Telluride's base and summit.

    Data sources

Snowfall and depth figures for Telluride come from official mountain sources; weather and outlook data comes from independent forecasting services. The mountain is served by 19 lifts, including 8 quad chairlifts and 2 gondolas.

    When to check

Conditions can change overnight, so mornings and late afternoons are the best times to check back on Telluride.
