Jo Ryan opened Mont Tremblant Lodge in February 1939, developing a resort that included a summer beach and tennis club alongside 16,500 acres of mountain terrain leased from the Quebec provincial government. Mary Ryan continued operating the resort until selling it to a group of Montreal businessmen in 1966, and ownership changed hands several times over the following fifteen years.
Intrawest acquired Mont Tremblant for an estimated 22 million Canadian dollars in 1991, its first resort purchase after Blackcomb, and invested 48 million Canadian dollars between 1991 and 1995, lifting daily capacity from 8,500 to 14,500 skiers. The company's purpose-built pedestrian village, designed by Eldon Beck, the same architect behind Vail and the original Whistler Village, remains central to the resort's identity. Aerial Tram Collides With Crane at Alpe d'Huez: 23 Injured
An aerial tram carrying around fifty passengers struck the boom of a construction crane on the route to Pic Blanc at Alpe d'Huez on Wednesday morning, injuring 23 people, three seriously. The cabin tipped on impact before the operator reversed it to right the car. Most of the injured were treated on site, with five taken to hospital in Grenoble, including a pregnant woman assessed as a precaution.
