Steinplatte Bets on Luxury Lift Amidst Industry Challenges

The Steinplatte Winklmoosalm ski resort has announced plans for a new high-end chairlift to debut in the 2025/26 season, replacing an existing route to the summit. While marketed as a comfort upgrade, this development raises questions about resort priorities and pricing strategies in an era of climate uncertainty and economic pressures facing the ski industry.

The new Bäreckbahn, a Doppelmayr-manufactured detachable 6-seater, will feature weather protection hoods, heated seats, and locking bar mechanisms. These luxury additions, while potentially appealing to some guests, seem at odds with the core experience many skiers and riders seek.

Steinplatte, straddling the Austrian-German border near Reit im Winkl, is positioning this lift as a leap into modernity. The resort claims the upgrade will make the mountain 'safer, faster, and more family-friendly.' However, it's worth questioning whether heated seats genuinely improve safety or simply drive up operational costs that will likely be passed on to visitors.

The announcement also mentions a new operations building with a service station and mountain rescue base. While improved safety infrastructure is generally positive, the emphasis on luxury features for the lift itself suggests misplaced priorities.

Notably absent from the announcement is any mention of sustainability initiatives or how this energy-intensive upgrade aligns with climate goals. As the ski industry faces existential threats from warming winters, investments in snowmaking efficiency or renewable energy might offer more long-term value than heated chairlift seats.

This lift upgrade follows a concerning trend of ski resorts focusing on high-end amenities to justify ever-increasing ticket prices. While comfort improvements can enhance the guest experience, there's a risk of pricing out core skiers and riders who prioritise time on snow over frills.

The broader context is crucial here. Many resorts are struggling with shortened seasons, increased snowmaking costs, and pressure to consolidate. Steinplatte's investment suggests confidence in its long-term viability, but also raises questions about the sustainability of this luxury-focused model.

Ultimately, while some guests may appreciate the creature comforts of the new Bäreckbahn, its necessity is debatable. Skiers and riders planning trips to Steinplatte in 2025/26 should be prepared for the possibility of increased ticket prices to offset this investment. Whether the heated seats justify the likely cost increase will depend on individual priorities.
