Mt. Rose Begins Snowmaking for the 2026-27 Season at Lake Tahoe

Mt. Rose has switched on the snow guns for 2026-27, and altitude is doing a lot of the early work.

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe began making snow once the first snowfall arrived and temperatures dropped, with crews running the system whenever conditions allow to build a base for opening day. The resort put it this way: “The first snowfall has arrived, temperatures are dropping, and our snowmaking team is already getting after it.” An opening date has not been confirmed.

Why elevation matters at Mt. Rose

The resort credits its height with giving the snowmaking team a head start. Sitting between Reno and Incline Village in Nevada, Mt. Rose says it has the highest base elevation at Lake Tahoe, at 8,260 feet (about 2,518 m), with the summit reaching 9,700 feet (about 2,957 m). Colder air arrives earlier up there, which is what snowmaking needs. The latest update does not say which lifts or trails will be in play on opening day.

Nearly US$2 million of upgrades

The snowmaking push follows almost US$2 million in infrastructure and facilities work outlined in the resort’s season preview. The snowmaking system gets a replacement main line, and a new PistenBully joins the grooming fleet. A summer retrofit of the Chuter lift means every lift at the resort now has restraint bars.

Down at the Main Lodge, a redesigned lobby moves Guest Services and season pass sales to ease traffic flow. New rental equipment options and an updated online purchasing system are also part of the winter preparations.

At the Wildslide Snow Tubing Park, a new enclosure over the tubing lift gives riders some protection from the weather. Expanded lodge services there will cover food, beverages, indoor seating, ticket sales and retail. The park advertises up to 20 tubing lanes and is targeting a Thanksgiving 2026 opening, separate from the ski area’s.

An US$11 million operations facility is next

Bigger work is coming after this winter. Preliminary site work started over summer for a US$11 million mountain operations facility, with construction planned for 2027.

Other Tahoe resorts are getting ready too

Mt. Rose is not the only Tahoe resort putting money into snowmaking. Palisades Tahoe has expanded snowmaking along Mountain Run, one of the main routes between its upper mountain and the base area, aiming to support early-season top-to-bottom skiing and hold coverage later into spring.

Several resorts have posted target opening dates. Heavenly and Northstar are aiming for 20 November, Palisades Tahoe plans 25 November and Kirkwood is looking at 4 December. Opening-day terrain at Palisades Tahoe depends on weather and snow, and all of these dates are targets rather than guarantees.
