    The Overview
    MF

SilverStar's summit reaches 1,888 metres, dropping 731 vertical metres to a base at 1,157 metres across 132 runs spread over roughly 1,328 hectares near Vernon, British Columbia. Terrain splits 40 per cent intermediate, 35 per cent advanced, 15 per cent beginner and 10 per cent expert, with average annual snowfall of roughly 7.0 metres. Nine lifts, including four quad chairs and one six-person chair, serve the mountain alongside one gondola, two surface lifts and one t-bar.

SilverStar holds a distinctive place among Okanagan resorts for its brightly painted, Victorian-themed village and terrain spread across four separate mountain faces. Its considerable ski-in and ski-out village, combined with reliably light, dry Okanagan snow, has built SilverStar's reputation as one of the region's more visually distinctive family destinations.

Locals had skied the mountain since the early 1930s, and Silver Star Sports was formally started in 1956 or 1957 by Russ Postill, Mike Lattey, Bill Attridge and several other local enthusiasts, who brought in a trailer and a small portable rope tow near Sovereign Lake. The resort formally launched as SilverStar Mountain Resort in 1958, and a group led by Norm Crerar and Charlie Locke purchased Silver Star Sports in 1981, forming Silver Star Mountain Resorts Ltd.

Australian businessman Desmond Schumann, who already owned nearby Big White since 1985, purchased the majority of SilverStar's assets in 2001. Following his death, his daughter Jane Cann received full ownership in 2012, while son Peter Schumann took ownership of Big White. Powdr Corporation acquired SilverStar in December 2019, and the resort has more recently become part of Pacific Group Resorts' portfolio. Adult daily tickets run from 109 to 129 Canadian dollars.

    When to visit Silverstar

The 2025-26 season at SilverStar ran from 22 November 2025 to 5 April 2026, a roughly nineteen-week season supported by average annual snowfall of around 7.0 metres. This season followed the resort's transition into Pacific Group Resorts' portfolio, its most recent ownership change after decades under Schumann family control.

Midwinter, from December through February, typically brings the most consistent, light and dry conditions to SilverStar's varied terrain across four mountain faces. The resort's brightly coloured village continues to draw considerable family visitation from across the Okanagan and Western Canada.

SilverStar's ski-in and ski-out village and varied terrain continue to support strong visitation throughout the season, particularly during school holiday periods. The resort's considerable scale across four faces helps distribute crowds relative to its popularity.

Specific event programming beyond standard operations is not confirmed in available resort information. Following its transition to Pacific Group Resorts, SilverStar continues building on nearly seven decades of history since Silver Star Sports' founding in the mid-1950s. The resort's distinctive village character and four-face terrain remain central to its enduring popularity in the Okanagan.

    Getting there

Getting to Silverstar, and where to stay

SilverStar sits near Vernon, British Columbia, in the Monashee Mountains, with a base elevation of 1,157 metres and a summit at 1,888 metres across a 731-metre vertical drop over roughly 1,328 hectares spread across four mountain faces. This setting places the resort within the North Okanagan, a comparatively short drive from Vernon.

Vernon, a mid-sized Okanagan city, offers extensive lodging, dining and services within a manageable drive, while SilverStar's own brightly painted village provides considerable ski-in and ski-out accommodation directly at the base.

SilverStar Road provides direct access to the resort from Vernon. Winter driving conditions on this route can include snow and ice, though the well-travelled road is regularly maintained given the resort's status as a major Okanagan destination.

Kelowna International Airport, roughly a one-hour drive away, is the primary gateway for visitors flying into the region, with SilverStar's considerable proximity to a well-served regional airport supporting substantial visitation from across Western Canada.

Two Confirmed Dead as Search Continues After Swiss Alps Fire

The death toll from Thursday night's fire at Restaurant Beverin in Thusis, Switzerland, has begun to firm up. One Swiss outlet, citing Graubünden Cantonal Police, reports that two of the five people initially reported missing have now been confirmed dead, leaving three unaccounted for. The building's collapsed stairwell and structural instability have slowed recovery efforts throughout. Here's what's changed since the fire broke out, and what's still unconfirmed.

Selwyn Snow Resort Closes Early as Rain Ends Its 2026 Season

Selwyn Snow Resort has called an early end to its 2026 season, a day after Victoria's Mount Baw Baw did the same. Rain on Thursday stripped what was left of the snowpack, and the cold nights needed to rebuild it through snowmaking never arrived. It's a rough result for a resort that only just found its footing again after being burned to the ground in the 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires and a multi-year rebuild. Here's how the season fell apart, and where Selwyn's been since the fire.

Mt Baw Baw Becomes First Australian Resort to Close for 2026

Mt Baw Baw is calling time on its 2026 season this Sunday at 5pm, becoming the first Australian resort to close for the year after warm spells and rain wore through its snowpack. Lifts stop, but the resort stays open, entry fees get waived, and there's one last Bollywood Weekend before the lights go out. Fifty-seven days after opening, here's how the season ended and what it means for the rest of Australia's struggling snowpack.

Arosa to Replace 40-Year-Old Hörnli Lifts With New Gondola and Chair

Arosa's Hörnli sector is getting its biggest overhaul in decades. The 1986 gondola and 1994 chairlift linking toward Lenzerheide are both being replaced, with capacity up, tower count down and a new base station lower on the hill. At roughly CHF 67 million, it is the largest single investment Arosa Bergbahnen has ever made - and the target opening has already slipped a year, to December 2028. Here is what is changing, and why the timeline moved.

Sundance Mountain Resort Is Getting a New High-Speed Quad and More Back Mountain Terrain This Winter

Sundance Mountain Resort's back mountain is finally getting a proper lift. The Electric Horseman Express opens for 2026-27, unlocking a new bowl next to Bishop's Bowl and three expert gladed chutes across roughly 105 fresh acres - on top of the Storyteller ridge run that debuted in preview form last season. It's Sundance's biggest expansion since 1985, and it turns a three-lift slog into a single six-minute ride to Bearclaw Summit.

Levi and Ruka Confirm October 2 Opening on Farmed Summer Snow

Finland's Levi and Ruka open for the 2026-27 season on October 2, more than seven weeks before most of Europe sees a lift turn. Neither resort is waiting on autumn snowfall - both are skiing on snow buried since last spring, insulated through the Finnish summer and dug back out for opening day. It is not a shortcut. It is a decades-old system now spreading from the Arctic Circle to Idaho, Utah, Vermont and Colorado. Here is how snow farming actually works, and why it is catching on.

Sölden's Old Einzeiger Chairlift Gets a Second Life in Montafon

Silvretta Montafon is replacing its ageing Freda chairlift - but not with something new. The resort is having a 1999 four-seater chairlift, retired from Sölden, dismantled, shipped to Vorarlberg and rebuilt with new electronics, cable and clamps. It has to be running before March 2027, when Silvretta Montafon hosts the FIS Snowboard, Freestyle and Freeski World Championships - the biggest winter sports event Vorarlberg has staged. Here's how a reused lift ends up cheaper.

Nassfeld Invests €13 Million in New 6-Seater Chairlift for 2026/27 Season

Nassfeld is putting €13 million into a new 6-seater chairlift, the Tressdorfer Almbahn, connecting Sonnleitn with the Tressdorfer Alm from December 2026. It replaces three ageing drag lifts and will run through summer too, from June 2027, moving up to 2,500 people an hour on the roughly three-minute ride. It's the latest step in Carinthia's largest ski resort building out a genuine year-round offering, following last year's Gartnerkofelbahn gondola.

    Understanding the Silverstar snow report

Silverstar snow conditions, updated regularly: current snowfall, snow depth, temperatures, and the outlook for this British Columbia resort.

    Snow measurements

Base depth, summit depth, and recent snowfall are the core numbers to watch. At Silverstar, summit conditions (1888m) can differ noticeably from the base, so we break both out separately rather than showing a single average.

    Weather conditions

Current weather conditions affect snow quality. Cold temperatures with low wind typically preserve snow quality, while warm temperatures or rain can impact conditions negatively — something worth watching closely at Silverstar's 1157m base elevation, where temperatures run milder than the summit.

    Data sources

Silverstar snow data is collected through a combination of on-mountain reports and weather forecasting services, giving you both official resort updates and independent forecast data in one place. The mountain is served by 9 lifts, including 4 quad chairlifts and a 6-person chairlift.

    When to check

Conditions can change overnight, so mornings and late afternoons are the best times to check back on Silverstar.
