Walter Moisan founded the resort in 1964, selecting the site specifically for its horseshoe-shaped topography and the natural snow-hole effect it created.
Shoe manufacturer Marc Blondeau acquired Stoneham in 1979, and within eight years the resort's development had overtaken nearby Tremblant, Orford and Sutton, with Stoneham gaining ownership of an entire six-mountain, 2,300-acre valley.
