    Resort Overview

Spanning the Franco-Swiss border with 600km of marked runs, Les Portes du Soleil ranks among Europe's largest interconnected ski domains. This vast Alpine playground offers extraordinary variety—from gentle family zones to the notoriously steep Swiss Wall with its 50° gradient. What distinguishes this remarkable area is the seamless blending of 12 distinct resorts, each maintaining individual character while contributing to an unparalleled skiing circuit. The panoramic views stretching from Mont Blanc to Lake Geneva create a backdrop that enhances the sense of Alpine grandeur across this cross-border skiing territory. High-altitude excellence characterizes Samnaun, where Switzerland's easternmost ski destination joins Austria's Ischgl to create the remarkable Silvretta Arena. Reaching elevations of 2,872m, this cross-border domain delivers exceptional snow reliability throughout its extended season. The area's distinctive feature is Samnaun's rare duty-free status, creating an unusual shopping opportunity alongside serious skiing credentials. From perfectly groomed cruisers to challenging black runs and extensive off-piste options, the terrain variety satisfies diverse skiing appetites while maintaining a reputation for both consistent conditions and vibrant mountain atmosphere.

Les Portes du Soleil Lift System

With 196 lifts efficiently connecting French and Swiss slopes, Les Portes du Soleil maintains exceptional skier flow across its massive terrain. Modern high-speed systems at key connection points ensure minimal waiting times, while strategic lift placement allows visitors to experience multiple valleys within a single day. The remarkable aspect of this network is its ability to transport skiers across international boundaries almost imperceptibly, creating a borderless skiing experience rare in the Alps. From Avoriaz's elevated plateau to Champéry's valley floor, vertical drops exceeding 900m deliver satisfying descents throughout the domain. Engineering excellence defines the lift infrastructure connecting Swiss Samnaun with Austrian Ischgl in the impressive Silvretta Arena. The revolutionary double-decker cable car—the world's first when installed—exemplifies the technical innovation throughout this cross-border network. Forty-five modern installations, including high-capacity gondolas and detachable chairlifts, efficiently transport skiers across 239km of groomed terrain with minimal waiting even during peak periods. The system's standout achievement is maintaining seamless international connectivity while serving vertical drops approaching 1,100m from valley floors to panoramic summits.

    Location & Getting There

Just 75 minutes from Geneva Airport lies the remarkable Franco-Swiss border region housing Les Portes du Soleil. This privileged location in the Chablais Alps encompasses celebrated destinations like Avoriaz and Morzine in France alongside Champéry and Morgins in Switzerland. The cultural contrast between French and Swiss mountain traditions becomes part of the skiing experience, with visitors enjoying distinct architectural styles, culinary influences, and après-ski atmospheres within a single ski circuit. Traditional villages throughout the region maintain authentic Alpine character while providing modern accommodations and dining options showcasing regional specialties. SAMNAUN – SILVRETTA ARENA Switzerland's easternmost valley houses Samnaun, positioned along the Austrian border approximately 80km from Innsbruck and 220km from Zurich. This remote location in the Lower Engadine preserves authentic mountain character while offering comprehensive modern amenities. What makes Samnaun truly unique is its isolated geographic position that historically prevented direct Swiss access, leading to its current duty-free status. The cultural landscape combines Swiss efficiency, Austrian liveliness, and ancient Romansh influences in a fascinating Alpine crossroads where visitors experience multiple mountain traditions within a single destination.

    Season Info

The skiing calendar at Les Portes du Soleil extends from mid-December through late April. January and February deliver the most consistent conditions, while March often combines excellent snow depth with increasing sunshine. The region's unique microclimate, influenced by Lake Geneva, frequently captures substantial snowfall when systems move through the northern Alps. This meteorological advantage, combined with comprehensive snowmaking across the domain, ensures reliable skiing throughout the season. Strategic skiers appreciate the varied aspects across multiple valleys, following optimal conditions by selecting north-facing slopes during warmer periods. From late November through early May, Samnaun–Silvretta Arena maintains one of the Alps' most reliable skiing calendars. The elevation advantage is significant, with 80% of runs situated above 2,000m, ensuring consistent conditions throughout winter and into spring. Early-season visitors benefit from the area's modern snowmaking capabilities, while midwinter delivers excellent natural coverage across predominantly north and east-facing slopes. The season's highlight often comes in March and April when warming temperatures create perfect corn snow conditions under clear blue skies, while maintained pistes retain their integrity well into the spring months.
