    The Overview
    MF
    Michael Fulton
Melbourne-based skier and snowboarder with 50+ resorts across 5 continents. Specialises in Australian resorts and international resort comparisons.

Hakuba Goryu spans 750 to 1676 metres elevation across 17 marked runs and 70 hectares of terrain, delivering 926 metres of vertical drop. The resort receives 11 metres of annual snowfall and connects at its summit with Hakuba 47 Winter Sports Park via the Alps Daira zone. Epic Pass holders receive five consecutive days of access with no blackout dates across all Hakuba Valley resorts.

The terrain breakdown favours progression skiers with 35 per cent beginner, 40 per cent intermediate and 25 per cent advanced. Three distinct zones define the mountain: the gentle Toomi area at the base, the family-oriented Iimori section with mogul and racing courses, and the upper Alps Daira zone accessed by the eight-passenger gondola. The longest run stretches 5 kilometres from summit to base.

Goryu operates the only night skiing in Hakuba Valley on the illuminated Toomi slopes from 1800 to 2130 nightly. The resort attracts a mix of Japanese families and international visitors, with English-speaking instructors and international services throughout the base facilities. Weekends see queues at the gondola, whilst weekdays remain relatively quiet.

The resort forms part of the ten-area Hakuba Valley network, all covered by the Hakuba Valley Pass or individual Goryu-47 combined tickets. The 2025-26 season runs from 5 December to 29 March. Goryu suits beginners finding their feet, intermediates seeking groomed cruisers, and families wanting varied terrain without the crowds of Happo One.

    When to visit Hakuba Goryu

The 2025-26 season at Hakuba Goryu opens 5 December 2025 and closes 29 March 2026, with the resort typically amongst the first in Hakuba Valley to spin lifts. Partial terrain often opens in late November when early snowfall permits, with full mountain access by mid-December. The southern Hakuba Valley location and 1676-metre summit capture consistent northwesterly storms.

Annual snowfall averages 11 metres, matching the broader Hakuba Valley accumulation driven by moisture from the Sea of Japan. The second week of January historically delivers the heaviest snowfall with 73 centimetres and 5.5 snowy days on average. Base depths at 750 metres can thin during warm spells, though the gondola-accessed upper mountain retains quality snow through March.

January and February offer peak powder conditions with cold temperatures and frequent storms, whilst December provides less crowded skiing as the snowpack builds. March brings spring conditions with soft snow in the afternoons and firmer mornings, though north-facing Hakuba 47 holds quality better. The resort extends its season longer than many Hakuba areas due to snowmaking on lower runs.

Night skiing operates nightly from opening through closing on the Toomi zone trails. The resort hosts racing events on the Iimori courses and maintains a terrain park, though Hakuba 47's park facilities draw more freestyle traffic. Early morning gondola service starts at 0700 on weekends and holidays during peak season.

    Getting there

Getting to Hakuba Goryu, and where to stay

Hakuba Goryu sits at the southern end of Hakuba Valley in Nagano Prefecture, with its base village at 750 metres in Kamishiro district. The resort lies within the Chūbu region beneath the Northern Japan Alps, where peaks exceed 2800 metres. The Hakuba Valley stretches 30 kilometres along the western slope of the Hakuba Range, connecting ten separate ski areas.

Hakuba Station sits 5 kilometres north and serves as the valley's main rail hub, whilst the Goryu base area centres on Escal Plaza with rental shops and restaurants. The village of Hakuba has 9000 residents and hosted alpine and ski jumping events during the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. Nagano City lies 40 kilometres east, connected by Route 148 which runs the length of the valley.

From Nagano, Route 19 and the Nagano Expressway provide access west to Route 148, with the drive taking 60 minutes in clear conditions. Tokyo sits 275 kilometres southeast, requiring four hours by car. The Hokuriku Shinkansen reaches Nagano Station from Tokyo in 90 minutes, followed by a 70-minute express bus to Hakuba.

Tokyo Haneda Airport lies 280 kilometres distant as the nearest international gateway, with direct buses running five to six hours. Tokyo Narita sits 330 kilometres away with similar transfer times via Shinkansen and bus connections. Matsumoto Airport operates 77 kilometres from Nagano but handles limited domestic flights. Free shuttle buses connect Goryu with other Hakuba Valley resorts and the Happo One transport hub.

Maverick Mountain's Only Chairlift Destroyed as Sand Creek Fire Tears Through Montana Ski Area

Maverick Mountain's Only Chairlift Destroyed as Sand Creek Fire Tears Through Montana Ski Area

Firefighters saved every base building at Maverick Mountain, Montana, but the resort's sole chairlift didn't survive the Sand Creek Fire. Owners Erik and Kristi Borge say the lift is "most likely" out for the 2026/27 season after flames tore through the mountain on August 8. The wildfire has since grown past 27,700 acres with zero percent containment. It's a gutting result for the tiny, one-lift operation near Dillon - though the lodge, groomers and equipment all made it through untouched.

Spain Moves to Ban Smoking at Ski Resorts Under New Tobacco Law

Spain Moves to Ban Smoking at Ski Resorts Under New Tobacco Law

Spain's government has approved a draft tobacco law that would ban smoking across a wide range of outdoor spaces, including sports venues - a category Spanish winter sports media expect to cover ski resorts, potentially extending to slopes and lifts themselves. The rules would also apply to e-cigarettes and vaping devices, even nicotine-free ones. The bill still has to clear the Spanish parliament before any ban, signage, or fines can take effect.

South Tyrol Approves New 16-Person Ciampinoi Gondola in Val Gardena

South Tyrol Approves New 16-Person Ciampinoi Gondola in Val Gardena

South Tyrol has approved a full rebuild of the Ciampinoi cable car in Selva di Val Gardena, replacing the current 12-person gondola with a 16-person cabin and a new mountain-station restaurant. Capacity is capped at 3,200 people an hour rather than the 3,600 the operator wanted, and 250,000 euros must go toward compensatory measures. No construction or opening date has been set, though the upgrade is partly aimed at clearing bottlenecks before the 2031 Alpine Ski World Championships.

Resort Spotlight: Hoshino Tomamu - Corporate Japan's Mountain Playground Revisited

Hoshino Tomamu is the ski resort equivalent of a conference hotel that happens to have excellent powder. Built for corporate retreats and package tourists, it offers genuine Hokkaido snow on surprisingly limited terrain - 29 runs spread across 585 vertical metres.

La Thuile's New Cable Car Replaces Two Ageing Chairlifts

La Thuile is spending 38.7 million US dollars on a new 10-person cable car linking Les Suches to Chaz Dura, replacing the La Combe and Chaz Dura chairlifts after nearly forty years of service. Built by Leitner, the new cable car runs 1,950 metres to a top station at 2,576 metres, carrying up to 3,000 people an hour with a six-minute ride. It also improves the connection to La Rosiere in France via the Petit-Saint-Bernard Pass, and is on track to open for the 2026/27 season.

The Remarkables Adds Scarpa Bowl to Its Inbounds Terrain

The Remarkables is adding new inbounds terrain for winter, bringing the Scarpa Bowl - known locally as the Toilet Bowl - into its lift-accessed network after years as backcountry-only ground. The roughly 500 metre run is reached by bootpacking from the top of the Sugar Bowl chairlift, with a shuttle picking skiers up from the road at the bottom. It's a smaller, faster addition than the resort's planned Doolans expansion, though the new terrain hasn't opened yet due to a lack of snow this season.

Ski Portillo Cut Off After Storm Dumps More Than 4.5 Metres of Snow

Ski Portillo Cut Off After Storm Dumps More Than 4.5 Metres of Snow

Ski Portillo remains isolated after an extended storm buried the Chilean resort under more than 4.5 metres of snow, with both ground and air access suspended since Tuesday while crews monitor avalanche hazards and worsening weather. Resort officials say further snowfall is expected in the coming days and haven't set a timeline for reopening the mountain road. Once access resumes, the scale of the snowpack could set up a strong season at one of the Southern Hemisphere's most historic ski resorts.

Resort Spotlight: Lotte Arai - Japan's Corporate Ski Anomaly With 22 Metres of Annual Snowfall

Lotte Arai receives 22 metres of annual snowfall - exceptional even by Japanese standards - but its corporate ownership model and limited terrain create an unusual cost-benefit equation. Here's what the numbers actually mean on the ground.

    Lift system

Hakuba Goryu operates 13 lifts including one gondola, one quad chairlift and 11 additional chairlifts across its three zones. The combined Goryu-47 area totals 19 lifts with two gondolas and 17 chairs, seven of which are high-speed detachable models. The Goryu Express Gondola carries eight passengers and completes the climb to Alps Daira in eight minutes.

The gondola serves as the primary summit access, depositing skiers at 1500 metres before a series of pair lifts continue to Zizou Peak at 1676 metres. The Toomi zone features three chairlifts including the Toomi Sky Four, whilst the Iimori section runs four lifts including the high-speed Cosmo Four. Goryu introduced Hakuba Valley's first conveyor belt loading system for beginner chairlift access.

From Zizou Peak, skiers traverse directly into Hakuba 47's lift network via connecting chairlifts, creating a seamless flow between the two mountains. The gondola mid-station provides an exit point for intermediates, whilst the upper lifts fan out to access the steeper Champion courses and backcountry gate. Lift-served vertical of 926 metres ranks eighth amongst Japanese resorts.

The lift infrastructure dates from various periods and several chairs require updating, though the gondola provides efficient uphill capacity. Weekend queues form at the main gondola between 1000 and 1200, but upper mountain lifts rarely see significant waits. Night skiing utilises three of the Toomi area lifts until 2130.
