Historic Snowfall Transforms Japan's Premier Ski Resorts

The 2024-25 ski season in Japan has kicked off with remarkable force, as Hokkaido's leading ski resorts report unprecedented December snowfall totals. Despite Mount Fuji marking its latest snow cover in 130 years, Hokkaido's resorts have more than made up for lost time with record-breaking accumulations.

Niseko United, Hokkaido's largest ski resort, has logged an impressive 311 centimetres (122 inches) in December alone, contributing to a seasonal total of 349 centimetres (137 inches). The nearby town of Kutchan measured 145 centimetres (57 inches) on December 30, marking the deepest December snow depth since 1956. The resort currently boasts a peak depth exceeding 2 meters, with forecasts suggesting more powder days ahead.

The bounty of snow extends beyond Niseko, with neighbouring Rusutsu reporting over 4 meters (13 feet) of accumulation for the season. All lifts and runs are operational, offering skiers and riders complete access to the mountain's terrain. The combination of cold temperatures and continued snowfall promises to maintain these prime conditions.

Furano has emerged as another standout destination, accumulating roughly 3 meters (10 feet) of snow, including an impressive 130 centimetres (51 inches) in recent days. The resort offers full top-to-bottom skiing in the Furano Zone, while the Kitanomine area has been welcoming skiers and riders since December 21.

The abundant snowfall isn't limited to Hokkaido. Resorts in Honshu's Hakuba Valley, including Happo, Goryu, and Hakuba 47, have recorded up to 2 meters (6.6 feet) at higher elevations. With another significant storm system approaching, conditions are set to improve even further.

As Japan's ski resorts continue to receive fresh powder, the 2024-25 season is shaping up to be one for the record books. The consistent snowfall and optimal temperatures have created perfect conditions for skiers and riders seeking the legendary Japanese powder experience.
