Cardrona's Major Expansion Transforms Southern Hemisphere Skiing

Cardrona Alpine Resort in New Zealand is preparing for a significant transformation in the 2025 ski season. The resort has unveiled a new trail map that showcases its expansion plans, which will make it the largest ski resort in the Southern Hemisphere. This expansion includes the addition of the Soho Basin, which will add 150 hectares of new terrain to the resort's offerings.

The new trail map, designed by Rad Smith, provides a comprehensive view of the resort's expanded layout. It highlights the Soho Basin area, which will be serviced by a new Doppelmayr high-speed six-pack chairlift called the Soho Express. The map illustrates a variety of new runs in this area, ranging from intermediate to expert difficulty levels.

In addition to the Soho Basin, the map reveals other new features for the 2025 season. A new T-Bar lift has been added, providing quick access to several terrain parks and a racing trail. The map also shows the recently added Willow's area, demonstrating how these expansions have significantly increased the resort's skiable terrain.

Cardrona's expansion goes beyond just new runs and lifts. The resort is also constructing a new lodge at the base area, enhancing its facilities to accommodate the increased capacity. These improvements are set to position Cardrona as a premier ski destination in the Southern Hemisphere.

The new trail map represents a shift from the previous design by James Niehues, adopting a broader perspective to encompass all of Cardrona's expanded terrain pods in a single view. This change in mapping style reflects the substantial growth of the resort and provides skiers and riders with a clear overview of the expanded layout.

Cardrona Alpine Resort is scheduled to open for the 2025 season on 14 June, offering skiers and riders the opportunity to explore its newly expanded terrain and experience the largest ski area in the Southern Hemisphere.
