Swiss Ski Resorts Achieve Record-Breaking Season

The 2024/25 winter season has proven to be exceptional for Swiss ski resorts. Cable car companies across Switzerland reported an 11% increase in visitor numbers compared to the previous year. This growth represents the best performance in the last decade, surpassing even the strong 2021/22 season. When compared to the five-year average, the increase in visitors is even more substantial at 21%.

The Swiss Cable Car Industry Association (SBS) collected data from over 120 member resorts throughout Switzerland to compile these statistics. The analysis covers the entire winter season, from the opening of the resorts to the end of April. This comprehensive approach allows for a detailed understanding of visitor patterns throughout the season.

The season began with early snowfall in lower-lying areas, which generated interest among skiers and riders. Despite relatively dry weather and limited natural snowfall for the remainder of the season, ski resorts maintained high-quality slopes through artificial snow production. This underscores the importance of snowmaking capabilities in ensuring a successful ski season.

Lower altitude resorts and smaller operations benefited significantly from the favourable conditions. Resorts in the Vaud and Fribourg Alps saw a remarkable 31% increase in visitors, while the Bernese Oberland and Central Switzerland experienced growth of 21% and 20% respectively. Eastern Switzerland also performed well with a 17% increase. Other regions, including Ticino, Valais, and Graubünden, saw more modest but still positive growth.

Smaller ski areas, in particular, saw substantial gains. Resorts with annual passenger transport revenue up to 2 million Swiss francs averaged a 22% increase in visitors. Medium-sized resorts (2-10 million francs in revenue) saw a 14% increase, while larger resorts (over 10 million francs) experienced a 9% growth in visitor numbers.

Berno Stoffel, Director of Swiss Cable Cars, highlighted the importance of smaller and lower-lying ski areas in introducing new generations to snow sports. These resorts often serve as the starting point for children learning to ski, playing a crucial role in cultivating a long-term interest in winter sports.

The strong performance of the 2024/25 season is particularly notable when compared to the five-year average, with visitor numbers up by 21%. This indicates a robust recovery and growth in the Swiss ski industry.

The Swiss Cable Car Industry Association plans to release a more detailed analysis of the 2024/25 season in August. This report, titled 'Seasonal Review 2024/25', will provide in-depth information on visitor numbers, revenue, and guest demographics across Swiss ski resorts.
