Lift-1, the resort's first chairlift, opened on 14 December 1946 as the world's longest chairlift at the time, establishing Aspen Mountain as the foundation of what would become a four-mountain skiing empire.
The Aspen Skiing Company did not pay dividends until Twentieth Century Fox purchased it in 1977, and by July 1985 ownership had passed to the Crown family of Illinois alongside a partnership called MKDG.
