    The Overview
    MF
    Michael Fulton
Melbourne-based skier and snowboarder with 50+ resorts across 5 continents. Specialises in Australian resorts and international resort comparisons.

Mad River Glen's summit reaches 3,638 feet, dropping roughly 2,037 vertical feet to a base at 1,601 feet across 52 runs spread over 115 acres in Fayston, Vermont. Terrain splits 35 per cent each for advanced and intermediate, 20 per cent beginner and 10 per cent expert, with average annual snowfall of roughly 185 inches. Three lifts, including the legendary Single Chair, serve the mountain alongside one triple chair and one t-bar.

Mad River Glen operates as the only cooperatively owned ski area in America, a genuinely unique structure that has protected the mountain's deliberately unpretentious, skier-first character for decades. Its famous slogan, 'Ski it if you can,' reflects the resort's reputation for challenging, largely ungroomed terrain that has earned a fiercely devoted following.

Roland Palmedo, who also later helped shape skiing at Stowe, founded Mad River Glen in 1947, leading a group of investors that included members of the Rockefeller family, with the explicit intention of creating a ski area for dedicated skiers with minimal commercial development. The resort's Single Chair, a pioneering fixed-grip lift, was completed and began operating in 1948 alongside five original trails and a small base lodge, and remains today the only lift of its kind still operating in the contiguous United States, travelling at 600 feet per minute.

A group led by Truxton Pratt purchased the ski area in 1972, and his wife Betsy took controlling interest of the Mad River Corporation upon his death in 1975. Wanting to sell only to people she could trust, Betsy Pratt eventually created a cooperative ownership structure, and on 5 December 1995 the Mad River Glen Cooperative formed, giving the resort's devoted skiers direct ownership and a voice through regular Town Hall meetings. When the ageing Single Chair needed attention, more than 80 per cent of shareholders voted to restore it rather than replace it, raising the full 1.8 million US dollar cost through community donations. Adult daily tickets run from 89 to 109 US dollars, with active military skiing free.

When to visit Mad River Glen

The 2025-26 season at Mad River Glen ran from 13 December 2025 to 5 April 2026, a roughly sixteen-week season supported by average annual snowfall of around 185 inches across the resort's challenging, largely natural-snow terrain. Season dates can shift depending on early and late-season weather.

Midwinter, from December through February, typically brings the most consistent conditions to Mad River's advanced-and-intermediate-weighted terrain. As a cooperatively owned resort without major multi-resort pass affiliation, Mad River draws a fiercely devoted visitor base of shareholders and dedicated skiers specifically seeking the mountain's authentic, largely ungroomed character.

The resort's famous 'Ski it if you can' ethos continues to define visitor expectations throughout the season, with limited grooming and a genuine emphasis on natural, challenging conditions. Cooperative shareholders participate in regular Town Hall meetings, giving the resort's devoted skier-owners a direct voice in seasonal operations and management decisions throughout the year.

Specific event programming beyond standard operations is not confirmed in available resort information. Since the Mad River Glen Cooperative's formation on 5 December 1995, following Betsy Pratt's decision to sell only to trusted skiers, the resort has continued operating under its unique shareholder governance model. The legendary Single Chair and the cooperative's preservation-first values remain central to Mad River's identity each season.

    Getting there

Getting to Mad River Glen, and where to stay

Mad River Glen sits in Fayston, Vermont, in the Mad River Valley, with a base elevation of 1,601 feet and a summit at 3,638 feet across a roughly 2,037-foot vertical drop over 115 acres. This setting places the resort within one of Vermont's most storied ski valleys, alongside neighbouring Sugarbush.

Waitsfield and the broader Mad River Valley offer lodging, dining and a genuinely close-knit ski community atmosphere within a short drive of the resort. Burlington, Vermont's largest city, lies within a reasonable drive as well, providing a broader regional population base.

Vermont State Route 17 provides access to the resort through the Mad River Valley. Winter driving conditions on this route can include snow and ice, though the well-travelled road is regularly maintained given the valley's status as a significant regional ski destination. There is no direct public transport service to the mountain.

Burlington International Airport, within a reasonable drive, is the nearest airport with substantial commercial service, making Mad River Glen accessible for visitors flying into northern Vermont, though the resort's devoted visitor base is drawn primarily by its cooperative ownership and distinctive character rather than convenience.

Maverick Mountain's Only Chairlift Destroyed as Sand Creek Fire Tears Through Montana Ski Area

Firefighters saved every base building at Maverick Mountain, Montana, but the resort's sole chairlift didn't survive the Sand Creek Fire. Owners Erik and Kristi Borge say the lift is "most likely" out for the 2026/27 season after flames tore through the mountain on August 8. The wildfire has since grown past 27,700 acres with zero percent containment. It's a gutting result for the tiny, one-lift operation near Dillon - though the lodge, groomers and equipment all made it through untouched.

Spain Moves to Ban Smoking at Ski Resorts Under New Tobacco Law

Spain's government has approved a draft tobacco law that would ban smoking across a wide range of outdoor spaces, including sports venues - a category Spanish winter sports media expect to cover ski resorts, potentially extending to slopes and lifts themselves. The rules would also apply to e-cigarettes and vaping devices, even nicotine-free ones. The bill still has to clear the Spanish parliament before any ban, signage, or fines can take effect.

South Tyrol Approves New 16-Person Ciampinoi Gondola in Val Gardena

South Tyrol has approved a full rebuild of the Ciampinoi cable car in Selva di Val Gardena, replacing the current 12-person gondola with a 16-person cabin and a new mountain-station restaurant. Capacity is capped at 3,200 people an hour rather than the 3,600 the operator wanted, and 250,000 euros must go toward compensatory measures. No construction or opening date has been set, though the upgrade is partly aimed at clearing bottlenecks before the 2031 Alpine Ski World Championships.

La Thuile's New Cable Car Replaces Two Ageing Chairlifts

La Thuile is spending 38.7 million US dollars on a new 10-person cable car linking Les Suches to Chaz Dura, replacing the La Combe and Chaz Dura chairlifts after nearly forty years of service. Built by Leitner, the new cable car runs 1,950 metres to a top station at 2,576 metres, carrying up to 3,000 people an hour with a six-minute ride. It also improves the connection to La Rosiere in France via the Petit-Saint-Bernard Pass, and is on track to open for the 2026/27 season.

The Remarkables Adds Scarpa Bowl to Its Inbounds Terrain

The Remarkables is adding new inbounds terrain for winter, bringing the Scarpa Bowl - known locally as the Toilet Bowl - into its lift-accessed network after years as backcountry-only ground. The roughly 500 metre run is reached by bootpacking from the top of the Sugar Bowl chairlift, with a shuttle picking skiers up from the road at the bottom. It's a smaller, faster addition than the resort's planned Doolans expansion, though the new terrain hasn't opened yet due to a lack of snow this season.

Ski Portillo Cut Off After Storm Dumps More Than 4.5 Metres of Snow

Ski Portillo remains isolated after an extended storm buried the Chilean resort under more than 4.5 metres of snow, with both ground and air access suspended since Tuesday while crews monitor avalanche hazards and worsening weather. Resort officials say further snowfall is expected in the coming days and haven't set a timeline for reopening the mountain road. Once access resumes, the scale of the snowpack could set up a strong season at one of the Southern Hemisphere's most historic ski resorts.

Understanding the Mad River Glen snow report

Planning a day at Mad River Glen? Our snow report combines official mountain data with live weather so you know exactly what conditions look like right now, from the 488m base to the 1109m summit.

    Snow measurements

Snow depth at Mad River Glen is tracked at both the base and summit, since the two elevations often see different totals — roughly a 621m difference here. We report fresh snowfall over the last 24 hours and 7 days alongside the running season total, in both metric and imperial units.

    Weather conditions

Current weather conditions affect snow quality. Cold temperatures with low wind typically preserve snow quality, while warm temperatures or rain can impact conditions negatively — something worth watching closely at Mad River Glen's 488m base elevation, where temperatures run milder than the summit.

    Data sources

Mad River Glen snow data is collected through a combination of on-mountain reports and weather forecasting services, giving you both official resort updates and independent forecast data in one place. The mountain is served by 4 lifts in total.

    When to check

Conditions can change overnight, so mornings and late afternoons are the best times to check back on Mad River Glen.
