If you have skied or snowboarded at any major ski resort around the world there is a high chance the trail map was painted by James Niehues. This iconic legend has been painting the trail maps of the world’s best resorts for over 30 years and we here at SnowStash are massive fans of his work. Now, Niehues has let everyone know that he is officially going to retire from the duties of painting professionally and as part of this decision he has advised that for the first time ever he will be releasing 10 pieces of original artwork from his collection. On October 19th, 2021, I will release the first set of 10 originals showcasing resorts across the United States including select original paintings and sketches of Brighton, Mount Hood Ski Bowl, Northstar, Killington Pico, Okemo, and Heavenly.Paintings of Telluride and Snowmass highlight the list as they were done for Snow Country Magazine more than 25 years ago. They will be auctioned with 100% of the proceeds going to support the Colorado Snowsports Museum and Hall of Fame. You can buy any of James Niehues’ work directly from his website.

More info on the collection being auctioned off can be found in the official press release belowLegendary Ski Map Artist James Niehues Releasing Original Paintings and Sketches to the Public for the First Time EverSnowmass and Telluride originals to be auctioned off to support Colorado Snowsports Museum and Hall of FameDENVER (October 5, 2021) — James Niehues, the celebrated artist behind the evocative hand-painted depictions of more than 200 ski resorts across the globe, announces a release of his collection of original paintings and sketches covering the past 35 years as he steps away from creating ski resort trail maps to focus on other projects. On October 19th, 2021 Niehues will release his first set of 10 originals showcasing the breadth of his work spanning resorts across the United States including select original paintings and sketches of Brighton, Mount Hood Ski Bowl, Northstar, Killington Pico, Okemo and Heavenly. Two of the original works being released – Snowmass and Telluride – are among the most rare items in Niehues’ collection as they feature his early work with Snow Country Magazine from more than 25 years ago. They will be auctioned with 100% of the proceeds going to support the Colorado Snowsports Museum and Hall of Fame.

Aspen Snowmass Ski Resort Trail Map “I have always enjoyed the challenge of fitting an entire mountain on a single page,” says Niehues. “Mountain’s are wonderful puzzles, and I knew if I painted with the right amount of detail, they would last. A good design is relevant for a few years, maybe even a decade. But a well-made map is used for generations. As I retire from painting ski maps, I am thrilled to know hundreds of my maps are still used by skiers and snowboarders, including my earliest work from the 1980s.”In addition to the original Snowmass and Telluride paintings, 25 framed Limited Edition canvas prints of each mountain will be for sale, signed and numbered by the artist. Further releases of Niehues’ collection of his original paintings and sketches will be announced in the coming weeks.

Telluride Ski Resort Trail Map “The museum is beyond grateful to James for this generous fundraising opportunity. In addition to preserving his life’s work, we’re also delighted to share it with the public,” says Jennifer Mason, Executive Director of The Colorado Snowsports Museum and Hall of Fame.Niehues is also excited to announce his collaboration with Wagner Custom Skis, who will feature his art as part of their custom ski graphics. Wagner Custom will donate a pair of their custom skis featuring either Snowmass or Telluride as part of the fundraising effort for Colorado Snowsports Museum and Hall of Fame.“It is an honor to work with Jim, someone whose art has been a part of so many skier and snowboarders’ lives,” says Pete Wagner, CEO & founder of Wagner Custom Skis. “We’re excited about the connection our customers feel to his iconic artwork and to their favorite ski destinations, and that we’ll now be able to offer a Niehues design to further personalize their skis like no other.”

James would use aerial shots to help form his artworks Finally, in conjunction with the release of his originals, Niehues will also be making available a single, one-time only non-fungible token (NFT) for Snowmass and Telluride with proceeds supporting the Colorado Snowsports Museum. Additional details will be available later this month.“Ben Farrow and I are thrilled to be partnering with Jim to raise money for the Colorado Snowsports Museum. Their commitment to preserving the heritage and history of skiing is unparalleled,” says Todd Bennett, co-founder of Open Road Ski Company. To be the first to know about future original releases and to keep up-to-date on Niehues’ journey to document the beauty of America’s public lands, visit jamesniehues.com, or follow his adventures on Instagram (@jamesniehues), Twitter (@jamesniehues) and Facebook (@jamesniehuesorsc).

Arosa to Replace 40-Year-Old Hörnli Lifts With New Gondola and Chair

Arosa to Replace 40-Year-Old Hörnli Lifts With New Gondola and Chair

Arosa's Hörnli sector is getting its biggest overhaul in decades. The 1986 gondola and 1994 chairlift linking toward Lenzerheide are both being replaced, with capacity up, tower count down and a new base station lower on the hill. At roughly CHF 67 million, it is the largest single investment Arosa Bergbahnen has ever made - and the target opening has already slipped a year, to December 2028. Here is what is changing, and why the timeline moved.

Sundance Mountain Resort Is Getting a New High-Speed Quad and More Back Mountain Terrain This Winter

Sundance Mountain Resort's back mountain is finally getting a proper lift. The Electric Horseman Express opens for 2026-27, unlocking a new bowl next to Bishop's Bowl and three expert gladed chutes across roughly 105 fresh acres - on top of the Storyteller ridge run that debuted in preview form last season. It's Sundance's biggest expansion since 1985, and it turns a three-lift slog into a single six-minute ride to Bearclaw Summit.

Levi and Ruka Confirm October 2 Opening on Farmed Summer Snow

Finland's Levi and Ruka open for the 2026-27 season on October 2, more than seven weeks before most of Europe sees a lift turn. Neither resort is waiting on autumn snowfall - both are skiing on snow buried since last spring, insulated through the Finnish summer and dug back out for opening day. It is not a shortcut. It is a decades-old system now spreading from the Arctic Circle to Idaho, Utah, Vermont and Colorado. Here is how snow farming actually works, and why it is catching on.

Sölden's Old Einzeiger Chairlift Gets a Second Life in Montafon

Sölden's Old Einzeiger Chairlift Gets a Second Life in Montafon

Silvretta Montafon is replacing its ageing Freda chairlift - but not with something new. The resort is having a 1999 four-seater chairlift, retired from Sölden, dismantled, shipped to Vorarlberg and rebuilt with new electronics, cable and clamps. It has to be running before March 2027, when Silvretta Montafon hosts the FIS Snowboard, Freestyle and Freeski World Championships - the biggest winter sports event Vorarlberg has staged. Here's how a reused lift ends up cheaper.

Nassfeld Invests €13 Million in New 6-Seater Chairlift for 2026/27 Season

Nassfeld is putting €13 million into a new 6-seater chairlift, the Tressdorfer Almbahn, connecting Sonnleitn with the Tressdorfer Alm from December 2026. It replaces three ageing drag lifts and will run through summer too, from June 2027, moving up to 2,500 people an hour on the roughly three-minute ride. It's the latest step in Carinthia's largest ski resort building out a genuine year-round offering, following last year's Gartnerkofelbahn gondola.

Stelvio Glacier Suspends Summer Skiing, Leaving Continental Europe Without a Lift-Served Slope

Stelvio Glacier Suspends Summer Skiing, Leaving Continental Europe Without a Lift-Served Slope

Italy's Stelvio Glacier has pulled the plug on summer skiing from August 15. It was the last lift-served ski option left standing in continental Europe, and now there's none. Operator SIFAS pointed to persistent heat, storms, and a snowpack that simply wasn't refreezing overnight anymore. The cable car keeps running. Whether skiing comes back later this summer depends on the weather turning - and right now, nobody's promising anything.

Maverick Mountain's Only Chairlift Destroyed as Sand Creek Fire Tears Through Montana Ski Area

Maverick Mountain's Only Chairlift Destroyed as Sand Creek Fire Tears Through Montana Ski Area

Firefighters saved every base building at Maverick Mountain, Montana, but the resort's sole chairlift didn't survive the Sand Creek Fire. Owners Erik and Kristi Borge say the lift is "most likely" out for the 2026/27 season after flames tore through the mountain on August 8. The wildfire has since grown past 27,700 acres with zero percent containment. It's a gutting result for the tiny, one-lift operation near Dillon - though the lodge, groomers and equipment all made it through untouched.

Fairmont Niseko: New Luxury Resort Revives Stalled La Plume Site for Early 2028 Opening

Fairmont is bringing its second Japanese property to Niseko, and this one's got history. The 165-room resort will rise on the site of the stalled La Plume project, which collapsed into bankruptcy in 2025 before J-Will Partners bought the site for redevelopment. Set between Mount Yotei and Mount Annupuri, it's slated for an early 2028 opening - putting it in play for the 2027/28 season. Expect two restaurants, a spa, onsen bathing, and a kids' club, a short drive from Niseko Village and Hirafu.
