A plan has emerged, revealed by the Morrisville News and Citizen, which aims to connect two of Vermont's largest ski resorts through a gondola system. Vail Resorts, the parent company of Stowe Mountain Resort, and Bill Stritlzer, the long-time owner of Smugglers' Notch, have reportedly been engaged in discussions about this project for several years. However, they had initially kept the details confidential, until lawyers for the State of Vermont determined that the documents could be released under public records law.According to the proposal, a 9 tower gondola would be constructed to link Spruce Peak at Stowe with Sterling Mountain at Smugglers' Notch. The gondola would traverse a relatively flat area that includes an alpine pond and the Long Trail. The ride across the 2,600-foot connector lift would take slightly over five minutes, joining two mountains with distinct characteristics. Currently, Stowe, owned by Vail, operates six high-speed lifts, while Smugglers' Notch relies on Hall doubles to serve its narrow New England-style trails. Additionally, Stowe accepts the widely popular Epic Pass, while Smugglers' Notch does not and charges $85 for a peak day ticket.

The proposed route of the gondola at the summit of each resort. If the two resorts were connected, they would collectively offer six peaks, 17 lifts, and 194 trails. Toll House at Stowe and Morse Highlands at Smuggs are separated by a distance of 5.5 miles. Notably, the gondola would only ascend about 350 vertical feet, and no new ski trails would be created between the two mountains. The design of the lift would include 26 cabins and have a moderate hourly capacity of 1,200 skiers per direction. As part of the project, Smugglers' Notch has proposed placing 72 acres of private land under conservation easement, while Stowe would protect an additional 92 acres to offset the development of the gondola. There are also plans to potentially reroute a portion of the Long Trail to minimise visual impacts. State regulators would need to approve the project, and if it receives the green light, it is estimated to take two years to implement.About Stowe Mountain Resort:Stowe Mountain Resort, located in Stowe, Vermont, is one of the premier ski resorts in the northeastern United States.
