Schweitzer Mountain Making Good Progress On New Lift

Schweitzer Mountain Resort in Idaho is currently undertaking its most significant infrastructure project in history. The project, known as Base Camp, is set to introduce a range of new facilities, including a day skier portal, parking spaces, a day lodge, access road, three new lifts, and trail connections to the existing terrain. The resort, already the largest ski area in Idaho with almost 3,000 acres of skiing, aims to meet the demands of the rapidly growing Inland Northwest region. Currently, guests converge at a single base area, leading to congestion issues. The development of Base Camp aims to address these concerns, with a focus on parking and mountain access.Mountain Operations Director, Rob Batchelder, expressed excitement about the third phase of the resort's Master Plan and the unique solution offered by Base Camp. Batchelder emphasised the efficient transportation of people to the mountain as a priority. The project aims to enhance the guest arrival experience while accommodating increasing demand. Schweitzer Mountain Resort recently shared a video showcasing the construction crews pouring concrete for the new Creekside Quad chairlift, which is a part of the Creek Village area revitalisation plan. The Creekside Quad will replace the Musical Chairs Double lift and connect the Creek Village area to the resort's main village. This upgrade will significantly increase the skier lift capacity, allowing approximately 2,400 guests per hour, two to three times the capacity of the previous lift. The Creek Village area will also see other improvements, including a bridge over Schweitzer Creek, an expanded 1,400-space parking lot, and a road connecting the lot to a nearby roundabout. The improved loading and unloading process, along with the increased capacity, will enhance safety and efficiency for guests. Furthermore, the lift will provide transportation for "foot passengers" without skis or snowboards, even during the summer season. The resort has placed a deposit with Leitner-Poma to secure a new detachable quad, and the installation is scheduled to take place in 2023. The construction of a skier bridge across Schweitzer Creek will occur simultaneously with the installation of the longer lift. While the parking lot and lodge may not be completed for the 2023-2024 season, the new lift and the first new run will be available for guests. Additionally, there are plans to introduce a second new detachable lift in the future, connecting Base Camp to the Stella saddle. This lift will separate beginner and village-bound guests from other skiers and allow day skiers to access the backside of the mountain without relying on the popular Great Escape Quad. As the buildout continues, Schweitzer Mountain Resort intends to incorporate additional snowmaking and lifts into the area.

The area will feature ample parking, rental facilities, and SnowSports school resources. The Base Camp project is not only significant for the growing community but also for the ski industry as one of the last independently owned resorts.
