Summer Snow Surprise: Palisades Tahoe Anticipates Rare August Snowfall In an unexpected twist of summer weather, Palisades Tahoe, Lake Tahoe's largest ski resort, is gearing up for what could be its first snowfall of the season - in August. On August 23, 2024, the Lake Tahoe region woke to an unseasonable chill, with temperatures in nearby Truckee, California hovering just above 40 degrees Fahrenheit, while higher elevations dipped below freezing.A powerful storm system is set to bring rain, wind, and possible hail to the Lake Tahoe basin overnight. However, the real surprise lies in the forecast for the high peaks, particularly those above 7,500 feet, which could see up to one inch of snowfall by the morning of Saturday, August 24, 2024. If this forecast holds true, it will mark the first August snowfall in California in over two decades. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Palisades Tahoe (@palisadestahoe) In response to the approaching storm and strong winds battering the peaks, Palisades Tahoe has taken the precautionary measure of closing its iconic Aerial Tram for the day. The resort has turned to social media to share this news and redirect their followers' attention to their network of webcams, allowing eager observers to watch the storm's progression in real-time.As of 11:00 AM PT on August 24, no precipitation had been reported, but ominous clouds were beginning to gather over the peaks. The resort is actively updating its social media channels with screenshots from various webcams, providing a visual narrative of the approaching storm. While neither Palisades Tahoe nor OpenSnow have released official snow forecasts due to the storm's expected low accumulation, the National Weather Service's predictions offer a glimmer of hope for skiers and riders dreaming of a midsummer snow sighting.
