Monarch Mountain's Expansion: A Game-Changer for Colorado Skiing Monarch Mountain, a smaller resort tucked away in South-Central Colorado, is about to get even better. The resort recently announced an expansion that will transform the experience for visitors during their winter season. The expansion will add 377 acres of skiable terrain in the No Name Basin area, increasing Monarch's total skiable area from 800 to over 1,000 acres. The new area will feature both traditionally cleared trails and gladed terrain, catering primarily to intermediate and advanced skiers and riders.Currently, No Name Basin is only accessible through Monarch's renowned cat skiing operations. The expansion will make this terrain available via chairlift, opening up new possibilities for skiers and riders to enjoy the area.

Monarch Mountain spent a decade collaborating with various agencies, including the United States Forest Service, to ensure the project's viability and environmental responsibility. The approval process, which took three years, concluded that the expansion would have no significant impact on the area's sensitive cultural resources. Interestingly, the project is expected to improve forest health in the long run. By removing dead trees affected by the spruce beetle epidemic, the expansion will help reduce wildfire risk in the area.Work on the expansion is set to begin in summer 2024. The initial phase includes building an access road, extending power lines, and starting to cut ski runs. In summer 2025, construction will begin on a warming hut, restrooms, and a new 3-person fixed grip chairlift spanning 2,700 feet.

It means more runs, shorter lift lines, and even more opportunities to find that perfect powder stash. If you haven't visited Monarch Mountain yet, the next couple of winters will be the perfect time to experience this Colorado gem. With its growth on the horizon, Monarch is solidifying its place as one of the best ski resorts in the state. Whether you're a long-time fan or a first-time visitor, the expanded Monarch Mountain promises an unforgettable skiing and riding experience in the heart of Colorado's mountains.
