Fresh Powder Marks Strong Start to West Virginia's 2024/25 Ski Season
West Virginia's slopes roared to life on Thursday, December 5, as two major ski resorts opened their gates for the 2024/25 season. Both Snowshoe Mountain and Timberline Mountain welcomed skiers and riders with significant natural snowfall and multiple trails ready for action.
Timberline Mountain reported an impressive 8-10 inches of fresh snow blanketing the slopes overnight. The resort opened both their Quad Chair and 6-Person Chair lifts, though morning operations saw the summit lift temporarily closed due to high winds before opening later in the day. Skiers and riders had access to 68% of the mountain's trails, including challenging black diamond terrain.

At Snowshoe Mountain, conditions proved equally promising with 3 inches of new snow on opening day, adding to 6 inches accumulated over the previous 48 hours. The resort launched operations with three lifts - Ballhooter, Powder Monkey, and Skidder - serving 14 trails. Day one offerings included the Progression terrain park, with green and blue runs available for early season riders.
