Colorado's Powderhorn Mountain Resort Begins New Chapter with PGRI Ownership

Pacific Group Resorts, Inc. (PGRI) has strengthened its presence in the American ski industry by becoming the majority owner of Powderhorn Mountain Resort near Grand Junction, Colorado. The acquisition from Gart Properties marks a significant milestone for the resort, which has been under PGRI's management since 2018.

The ownership change comes at a crucial time for the Colorado resort. Grand Junction's rapid population growth has driven increased skier visits, prompting plans for substantial infrastructure improvements. The development strategy addresses both immediate needs and long-term growth opportunities.

Among the most significant planned upgrades is the replacement of the West End double chairlift with a modern detachable high-speed quad. This improvement will substantially enhance the mountain's accessibility and reduce wait times during peak periods. Additionally, the resort plans to expand its snowmaking network, particularly focusing on the race slope and West End terrain pod areas.

Ryan Schramm, Powderhorn's General Manager, emphasised the resort's commitment to keeping pace with regional growth. "We're looking at everything from parking to facilities. Those things can become really key as we grow our skier visits every year," he explained. The focus on infrastructure improvements demonstrates PGRI's understanding of the challenges facing growing ski communities.

PGRI brings substantial industry experience to Powderhorn, already operating several prominent ski resorts including Jay Peak, Mt. Washington Alpine Resort, Wintergreen Resort, and Wisp Resort, while also managing operations at Ragged Mountain Resort. This extensive portfolio suggests a promising future for Powderhorn under the new ownership structure.

One of the more innovative developments at Powderhorn is the ongoing Tiny Home village project. These slope-side accommodations currently serve as overnight lodging options for guests, but future plans include selling units for approximately $150,000, offering an affordable entry point into slope-side property ownership. The Gart family, despite selling their majority stake, continues to oversee this unique development.

The resort's current season has been strong, with 140 inches of snowfall recorded and nearly all trails and lifts operational. This positive momentum, combined with the new ownership and planned improvements, positions Powderhorn well for future growth.

The transition to PGRI majority ownership represents more than just a change in management structure. It signals the beginning of a new era for Powderhorn, one that promises to balance the resort's local charm with modern amenities and enhanced capabilities. For the growing Grand Junction community and visiting skiers and riders, these developments suggest an increasingly robust ski destination in the years ahead.

With Grand Junction's continued expansion and Powderhorn's strategic improvements, the resort is positioning itself as an increasingly attractive option for both local and visiting snow sports enthusiasts. The combination of enhanced infrastructure, improved amenities, and innovative accommodation options demonstrates a comprehensive approach to resort development that should serve the community well into the future.
