    Killington Modernises Superstar Chairlift

Killington Resort in Vermont has started a significant upgrade to its Superstar Chairlift. The project began immediately after the old lift's final run on 13 April. Crews quickly moved in to dismantle the existing infrastructure, marking the beginning of a comprehensive overhaul that will enhance the resort's facilities for the upcoming ski season.

The initial phase of the project involved removing the 95 old chairs, which have been relocated to Pico Mountain for repurposing on the Golden Express lift. This efficient recycling of equipment demonstrates Killington's commitment to sustainable practices in its operations.

Following the removal of the chairs, the resort tackled the complex task of taking down the 20-ton haul line. This process required specialised equipment, including a crane, due to the line's substantial weight and composition of metal with a plastic core. The haul line was cut into manageable sections and transported down the mountain for recycling.

With the line removed, crews began dismantling the sheave trains. These components will find new use on other lifts at the resort, including the Snowshed Express, Summit Express, and Golden Express. This reuse strategy extends to various other parts of the old lift, with Killington aiming to repurpose as much material as possible.

The project includes the replacement of all 12 existing towers with 11 new ones. The old towers are being removed, with some slated for repurposing as terrain park features or culverts. New footings for the towers are being prepared, involving drilling tests and, where necessary, blasting to create suitable foundations.

In addition to the chairlift replacement, Killington is undertaking several related projects. These include renovating the Northbrook barn to house new Skyeship Gondola cabins, installing 18,000 feet of new snowmaking pipe across various trails, and upgrading the Magic Carpet in the Learn to Ski area of Snowshed.

Killington Resort, known as 'The Beast' among skiers and riders, is a major ski destination in the eastern United States. With a vertical drop of 3,050 feet and 155 trails spread across six peaks, it offers diverse terrain for all skill levels. The resort is famous for having the longest ski season in eastern North America, often operating from late October to late May or early June. This extensive upgrade of the Superstar Chairlift is part of Killington's ongoing efforts to enhance its facilities and maintain its status as a premier ski resort in the region.
