Austrian Ski Giants Consider Historic Merger

KitzSki and SkiWelt, two of Austria's largest ski resorts, have begun talks about a potential merger. This collaboration could result in the creation of Austria's most extensive interconnected ski area, spanning over 500 kilometres of slopes. The discussions mark a significant development in the Austrian ski industry, with both resorts expressing interest in exploring the possibilities of integration.

The merger talks primarily focus on Westendorf, a key location within SkiWelt, as the potential link between the two resorts. KitzSki's management has initiated conversations with Westendorf's leadership, signalling the first concrete step towards this ambitious project. While formal meetings are yet to take place, both sides have publicly acknowledged the ongoing dialogue.

The initial phase of the merger plan centres on creating a unified ski pass, which would immediately benefit visitors by providing access to both resorts. This approach allows for a gradual integration process without the immediate need for new infrastructure. However, future plans may include physical connections between the resorts, with options such as new lifts being considered.

Currently, skiers can experience both resorts through the KitzSkiWelt Tour, a one-day ski circuit covering 85 to 88 kilometres of slopes across 12 villages. This existing tour demonstrates the potential for a more comprehensive integration.

If the merger proceeds, the combined ski area would offer more than 500 kilometres of interconnected slopes, surpassing the total skiable terrain in all of Germany. This would create a major attraction for international skiers and riders, potentially boosting tourism in the region.

The concept of merging these two ski areas isn't new, with initial discussions dating back two decades. Previous attempts faced challenges related to land acquisitions and technical feasibilities. The current talks suggest a renewed commitment to overcoming these obstacles, though significant planning and negotiation will be required to bring this vision to fruition.

Both KitzSki and SkiWelt are renowned for their extensive ski terrain and modern facilities. KitzSki, encompassing Kitzbühel and Kirchberg, offers 233 kilometres of slopes and 58 lifts. SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser–Brixental boasts 275 kilometres of slopes served by 81 lifts. A successful merger would combine these impressive statistics, creating a ski destination of unprecedented scale in Austria.
