Tragedy Strikes on Aiguille du Midi as Young Speedrider Falls
On Tuesday, May 13, a 20-year-old speedrider from the Chamonix Valley lost his life while descending the north face of Aiguille du Midi in France's Mont Blanc Massif. The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m., despite favourable weather conditions and fresh snow that had drawn several local skiers and riders to the area.

The young man was speedriding—a sport combining skiing and paragliding—with five companions when he lost control and fell approximately 1,000 metres. His fellow riders watched as he spiralled downwards, unable to regain stability. The fall ended at the rocky base of the north face.
The Chamonix High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon (PGHM) responded swiftly, supported by a Dragon 74 civil security helicopter. However, they could only recover the man's body, which was then transported to the local mountain rescue base. Authorities have not disclosed the rider's name but confirmed he was experienced and familiar with the terrain. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.

Speedriding is a high-risk sport that requires precise control and expertise in both skiing and paragliding. Practitioners descend steep slopes while flying close to the snow surface, alternating between skiing and gliding.
Aiguille du Midi, standing at 3,842 metres, is a popular starting point for extreme sports due to its cable car access and proximity to challenging routes. However, its high altitude, unpredictable weather, and exposed terrain make it one of the most dangerous areas in the Mont Blanc range.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks in extreme alpine sports, even for experienced participants in seemingly ideal conditions. It underscores the importance of safety measures and the unpredictable nature of high-altitude environments.
