Folgefonna Ski Resort Pushes Back Summer Opening

Folgefonna Glacier Ski Resort in Norway has announced a delay in its summer season opening. The resort, which operates exclusively during summer months, will not open before June 10. This postponement comes as the resort undergoes changes in ownership and management following its bankruptcy in late 2024.

The delay is primarily due to ongoing processes to obtain necessary permits for lift operations. The resort's new operators, Fonna Sport AS, stated they are working to bring skiing back to Folgefonna as quickly as possible, but additional time is required to complete the permitting process.

Further complicating matters, Fonna Sport AS recently announced changes in its ownership structure. Due to disagreements about the resort's future management, some parties have parted ways with the organisation. The remaining owners, including ski districts from Hordaland and Agder/Rogaland, will continue efforts to resume activities at Folgefonna.

Despite these challenges, there's optimism for a summer season. Fonna Sport AS, supported by regional ski associations and Norway's winter sports community, is collaborating with a bankruptcy trustee to acquire the resort's lift systems and equipment.

Folgefonna's importance extends beyond casual skiing. As one of only six summer-only ski resorts globally, it serves as a crucial training ground for professional athletes, national teams, and youth clubs. Its reliable summer snow and unique location make it invaluable for off-season preparation, especially as climate change affects snow conditions across Europe.

Located in western Norway, Folgefonna is renowned for its stunning setting. The resort offers views of surrounding fjords and is situated within Folgefonna National Park. It's accessible via a scenic drive from the village of Jondal, about two hours from Bergen Airport.

The resort's summer-only operation is due to heavy winter snowfall that blocks the access road. This unique characteristic, combined with its glacier terrain, makes Folgefonna an essential resource for seasonal training and technique development.

If the permit process concludes successfully in the coming weeks, Folgefonna could begin operations in mid-June. The new management remains committed to promoting winter sports at all levels, with a focus on youth development and adaptive skiing. For now, skiers and riders eagerly await updates on the resort's reopening, hoping to return to its slopes for the 2025 summer season.
