Mammoth Mountain Prolongs Ski Season Until Mid-June

Mammoth Mountain, a prominent ski resort in California, has declared June 15 as its official closing date for the 2024-2025 winter season. This announcement extends the skiing and riding season well beyond the typical closure dates of most Western U.S. ski resorts. The decision to remain open stems from the resort's substantial snowpack and continued interest from skiers and riders.

The resort plans to maintain daily operations until the mid-June closure, with lifts running from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This schedule allows visitors to take advantage of the best snow conditions during the early morning hours, as temperatures tend to rise throughout the day. The extended season at Mammoth Mountain is a result of above-average snowfall in California's Sierra Nevada region this winter.

Mammoth's ability to offer skiing into June is largely due to its high-elevation terrain, which helps preserve snow coverage even as temperatures increase. This late-season skiing opportunity has become a hallmark of Mammoth Mountain, setting it apart from many other ski resorts in North America that typically close in April or early May.

The June 15 closing date provides skiers and riders with a final chance to enjoy snow sports before the transition to summer activities. After the ski season concludes, Mammoth Mountain will shift its focus to warm-weather pursuits such as mountain biking and hiking, as well as various summer events.

Mammoth Mountain is located in the eastern Sierra Nevada of California, offering a diverse range of terrain suitable for all skill levels. The resort's high base elevation of 2,424 metres (7,953 feet) and summit elevation of 3,369 metres (11,053 feet) contribute to its reliable snow conditions and ability to extend operations into late spring and early summer. With 3,500 acres of skiable terrain and an average annual snowfall of over 10 metres (400 inches), Mammoth Mountain continues to be a popular destination for late-season skiing in the Western United States.
