Winter Park Ski Train Popularity Skyrockets
The Winter Park Express ski train has seen a remarkable increase in passengers for the 2025 season. The train, which runs from Denver to Winter Park Resort in Colorado, reported a 153% rise in ridership compared to the previous winter. This surge brought the total number of passengers to 43,919.
The significant growth in ridership follows changes to the service, including an expansion from three to five days a week and a reduction in fares by over 40%. These adjustments have made the train a more accessible and appealing option for skiers and riders heading to the slopes.
The success of the expanded service is evident in the numbers. Trains averaged 89% capacity, with most weekends operating at 95% or higher. This increase in rail travel has had positive effects beyond just moving more people. It has helped reduce traffic on busy mountain roads and lower emissions per passenger.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis highlighted the importance of providing affordable and reliable transport options to mountain areas. The expansion of the Winter Park Express service was made possible by revenue from the state's new Congestion Impact Fee on rental cars.
Amtrak, which operates the train in partnership with Winter Park Resort, reported that their crews and volunteers managed the increased ridership safely and successfully. The collaboration between various transport agencies and the resort has been crucial in delivering this improved service.
The Winter Park Express offers more than just transport to the ski slopes. Passengers can enjoy scenic views of the Rocky Mountains from the train's Sightseer Lounge car and purchase food and drinks on board. One-way tickets now start at $19 for adults and $9.50 for children, making it an affordable option for families and groups.
Winter Park Resort, located in Grand County, Colorado, is known for its varied terrain suitable for all skill levels. The resort features over 3,000 acres of skiable area, including 166 designated trails and 25 lifts. With the improved train service, more skiers and riders can now access these slopes without the stress of mountain driving.
The success of the Winter Park Express has implications beyond just one resort. It's part of a broader plan to expand rail services in Colorado, with future routes planned to connect Denver with other mountain communities. This development suggests a growing trend towards sustainable and convenient transport options for accessing ski resorts in the region.
