Swiss Alpine Village Evacuated as Landslide Threat Looms

Swiss authorities have ordered the evacuation of Brienz/Brinzauls, a small village in the Swiss Alps, due to the risk of an impending landslide. Located about 40 kilometres south of Davos, this centuries-old settlement of around 100 residents sits at an elevation of 1,150 metres. The evacuation order came after officials detected significant movement in a rock mass on a plateau above the village, raising concerns about a potential catastrophic collapse.

This isn't the first time Brienz/Brinzauls has faced such a threat. In June 2023, the village was evacuated before a major rockfall that narrowly missed causing extensive damage. More recently, in May 2025, the nearby village of Blatten suffered severe destruction when a glacier detachment triggered a massive landslide. While Blatten's residents were safely evacuated thanks to early warnings, the incident resulted in approximately 320 million Swiss francs (A$540 million) in damages.

Landslides pose a significant risk in mountainous regions worldwide, causing thousands of deaths annually. To mitigate these risks, authorities in Alpine areas continuously monitor various factors that could trigger landslides, including changes in landscape, land movement, and weather patterns.

The increasing frequency of such events has been linked to climate change, which is accelerating the erosion of rock faces and altering weather patterns in Alpine regions. This trend may lead to more frequent landslides, mudslides, and glacier movements in the future.

For skiers and riders planning trips to Swiss ski resorts, it's crucial to stay informed about local conditions and heed any warnings or advisories issued by local authorities. While popular ski destinations like Davos continue to operate normally, visitors should be aware of the potential for natural hazards in Alpine environments. Ski resorts in the region maintain rigorous safety protocols and work closely with geological experts to monitor and respond to any potential risks, ensuring the safety of visitors while preserving access to some of Switzerland's most spectacular mountain terrain.
