Whakapapa Ski Area Enhances Facilities for 2025 Season

Whakapapa Ski Area is preparing for a bustling 2025 snow season. The ski resort has upgraded its equipment and is fully staffed to welcome skiers and riders. General Manager Steve Manunui expressed optimism about the upcoming season, citing favourable weather forecasts and new operational management under Whakapapa Holdings Ltd (WHL).

The ski area has received 10 new TT10 snow guns from WHL, adding to their existing 45. This expansion in snow-making capacity allows for wider runs and extended operating periods. Whakapapa also boasts New Zealand's only snow factory, capable of producing snow in any weather condition.

In addition to enhanced snow-making capabilities, Whakapapa has invested in lift maintenance and acquired a new PistenBully snow groomer. The resort has hired about 120 staff members, with plans to increase to 300 during peak periods.

Manunui emphasized that the entire mountain is set to open, dispelling concerns about limited operations. The resort plans a full season with all facilities operational, offering a diverse range of activities from sightseeing and snow play to skiing and snowboarding for all skill levels. A comprehensive events calendar is also in place for the 2025 season.

While anticipation for the season is high, safety remains a priority. In 2024, ACC reported over $44 million spent on snow sports-related injuries, including 1020 incidents in the Manawatū-Whanganui region. ACC injury prevention officer James Whitaker urged skiers and riders to enjoy the slopes safely.

Manunui advised visitors to check the resort's report page for up-to-date information before their trip. The ski area has conducted extensive planning and will have a full crew on duty, including a safety services team, to ensure guests have a safe experience on the mountain.

Whakapapa Ski Area, located on Mount Ruapehu, is known for its diverse terrain and stunning views. The resort caters to a wide range of abilities, from beginners to advanced skiers and snowboarders. With its improved facilities and commitment to guest experience, Whakapapa is positioning itself as a top destination for the 2025 snow season in New Zealand.
