Sierra-at-Tahoe Is Charging for Parking on Weekends - Unless You're a Passholder or Carpooling

Sierra-at-Tahoe has announced a parking reservation system for the 2026-27 winter season, rolling it out on weekends and during holiday periods. It's one of those changes that'll divide people depending on how you typically show up to the mountain.

How the Parking Reservation System Works

The short version: if you're a Sierra-at-Tahoe passholder or you've got four or more people in your vehicle, parking reservations are free. If you're neither of those things, you'll be paying $25 per day to lock in a spot.

Certain programmes - like Ski and Ride School - may qualify for discounted reservations, though the resort hasn't released full details yet. Those are expected to come out in Fall 2026.

The resort says the system is designed to give guests more certainty before they leave home on busy days, cutting out the anxiety of not knowing whether there'll be anywhere to park when you arrive. Anyone who's driven up to a popular resort on a Saturday morning and faced a full car park will understand the logic there.

Why Sierra Is Making the Change

Sierra-at-Tahoe says the decision came off the back of feedback from both guests and locals. The stated goals are to reduce traffic congestion in the surrounding area, lower carbon emissions, and encourage more predictable arrival patterns - essentially, get people carpooling rather than each driving up solo.

Whether $25 is the right number to shift behaviour is a fair question, but the carpool exemption is a reasonable incentive. Four people splitting a day's skiing is already cheaper per head than showing up alone, so tieing the free parking to that threshold makes some sense.

2026-27 Season Passes Are Now on Sale

The parking announcement came alongside the launch of Sierra-at-Tahoe's 2026-27 season passes, which are available now from $339. If you're considering one, the deadline to lock in the lowest price is 30 April - after that, prices go up.

Current Sierra passholders can save up to $50 on renewal if they act before the same date.

There's also a useful perk worth noting: new 2026-27 passes are valid immediately, meaning you can use them to ride out the remainder of this spring season through to closing day, which is still to be confirmed.

A Growing Trend Across the Industry

Sierra-at-Tahoe isn't the first resort to head in this direction, and it almost certainly won't be the last. Managing access on peak days has become an ongoing challenge at popular ski areas across the US, and parking reservations are increasingly being used as one of the tools to do it.

For visitors planning a Tahoe trip, it's worth factoring the parking cost into your budget if you're not travelling in a group or picking up a pass. For everyone else, the carpool incentive is genuine - and $25 a day is still a lot less than what you'd pay to park near a ski resort in most other markets.
