World Cup Skiing Returning To New Hampshire Next Season

New Hampshire's Waterville Valley ski resort has exciting news for freestyle skiing fans! U.S. Ski & Snowboard announced that the resort will host its very first FIS World Cup freestyle (moguls) competition this upcoming season. While this is Waterville Valley's first time hosting a FIS freestyle event, the resort has a rich history in mogul skiing. It is renowned as the birthplace of freestyle in the U.S. and was home to the country's first freestyle instruction program. Over the years, Waterville Valley has also hosted various freestyle competitions outside of the FIS' jurisdiction, including the inaugural National Open Championships of Freestyle Skiing in 1970. The resort has also hosted multiple FIS events in disciplines other than freestyle, such as alpine racing.

For those who may not be familiar, the FIS, or International Ski and Snowboard Federation, is the leading governing body for snowsports. They oversee the global World Cup series, which includes alpine racing, slopestyle, and freestyle events. The organization has recently acquired the Freeride World Tour as well.

Sophie Goldschmidt, President and CEO of U.S. Ski & Snowboard, expressed her excitement about the new freestyle competition at Waterville Valley in a press release. She described the resort's incredible freestyle history and community, stating that it was a natural choice for another domestic World Cup stop. Goldschmidt and the organization are eagerly looking forward to celebrating the sport with fans, friends, and family at Waterville in January.

The event is scheduled to take place on January 27th and 28th, 2024, on Waterville Valley's Lower Bobby's Run. It will showcase both single and double moguls, offering an exhilarating experience for athletes and spectators alike.
