Record Breaking Snowfall Creates Perfect Early Season Conditions at Sugar Bowl

Sugar Bowl Resort in Northern California is experiencing a remarkable early season, with snowfall totals surpassing historical averages. The resort has accumulated 118 inches of snow so far, placing it at 118% of typical December measurements.

Recent storms sweeping through the Northern Sierra have transformed the resort into a mid-winter wonderland weeks ahead of the holiday season. In just seven days, the storms delivered an impressive 53 inches of fresh powder, contributing to the substantial season-to-date total of 118 inches.

This achievement marks a significant milestone for Sugar Bowl. Looking back through 25 seasons of data, only eight seasons - including the current one - have managed to exceed 100 inches by mid-December. The abundant snowfall has allowed the resort to open 99% of its terrain, offering skiers and riders extensive access to the mountain.

We’re already at 118% of our average snowpack for this time of year, which means conditions are top-notch heading into the holidays. The last time we had this much snow this early was December 2022. That season ended up being a massive winter, with 809 inches recorded at Sugar Bowl and powder days we’re still talking about! This amazing early start has been terrific to see and bodes well for the season ahead. – Jon Slaughter, Sugar Bowl marketing director.

Current conditions showcase impressive snow depths across the mountain, with the summit area boasting 65 inches of coverage. Even the base area maintains a solid 45-inch foundation, ensuring excellent conditions from top to bottom.

For skiers and riders planning their holiday trips, these early-season conditions present an unprecedented opportunity. All major lifts are operational, and the extensive snow coverage means access to a wide variety of terrain, from groomed runs to challenging off-piste areas. The substantial base depth also suggests promising conditions will likely continue throughout the season.

Sugar Bowl firing on all cylinders

The Northern Sierra region, known for its variable early-season conditions, has significantly benefited from this year's storm patterns. Sugar Bowl's location and elevation have perfectly positioned it to capture the maximum benefit from these weather systems, resulting in some of the best pre-holiday conditions seen in recent years.

Local meteorologists suggest these favourable conditions could continue, with more storm systems forecasted for the region. This early-season success positions Sugar Bowl Resort as a prime destination for both holiday visitors and season-long skiers and riders looking to make the most of what's shaping up to be an outstanding snow year.
