Emergency Gondola Evacuation Successfully Rescues 174 at Winter Park Resort
A routine day at Winter Park Resort transformed into a large-scale rescue operation when a gondola malfunction led to the evacuation of 174 skiers and riders on Saturday, December 23. The incident occurred just after noon at the popular Colorado ski resort, located 70 miles west of Denver.
The sophisticated safety system automatically halted the gondola's operation after detecting a crack in a crucial structural component - specifically, a bent and cracked rocker arm connecting two tower sections. This early detection system prevented any injuries and allowed for a controlled evacuation process.
The crack can be easily seen on tower one of the Winter Park gondola.
Winter Park Resort's ski patrol immediately launched a comprehensive rope evacuation, demonstrating their advanced training and preparation. The rescue operation, while time-consuming, followed strict safety protocols. Ski patrol members accessed each gondola cabin from above, first lowering guests' equipment to the ground before carefully evacuating each person using specialised rope systems equipped with safety seats.
"Ski patrol has trained extensively for this," explained resort spokesperson Jen Miller. "It's a very rare thing to have to evacuate a lift at all." The entire evacuation process took approximately five hours to complete, with all 174 guests safely returned to the ground.
The resort maintained normal operations across its other facilities, with 21 additional lifts continuing to serve guests throughout the weekend. Resort officials, state regulators, and the lift manufacturer have launched a thorough investigation into the cause of the structural crack, while maintenance teams work on replacing the damaged section.

While the timeline for reopening the gondola remains uncertain, the resort's swift response and successful evacuation highlight the importance of emergency preparedness at ski resorts. The incident, occurring during the peak holiday season, showcases how modern safety systems and well-trained personnel can effectively manage unexpected challenges in the skiing industry.
