Major Upgrades Coming to Sugarloaf: New Chairlift and Enhanced Snowmaking
Following a strong season with 113" of snowfall, Sugarloaf Mountain in Carrabasset Valley, Maine, has unveiled ambitious development plans for the coming year. Karl Strand, President & CEO of Sugarloaf Mountain, recently shared details of the resort's upcoming improvements, marking a significant step forward for one of New England's most beloved ski areas.
At the heart of the development is the relocation of Big Sky Resort's Six Shooter chairlift to Sugarloaf. This detachable high-speed lift will replace the current Timberline chairlift, which has served skiers and riders since the 1997-98 season. The upgraded lift will extend its reach to Bullwinkle's Restaurant, offering faster summit access for visitors. This strategic lift placement will significantly improve mountain access and reduce queue times during peak periods.
Sugarloaf Looking Ahead
The resort's snowmaking infrastructure is set for a remarkable transformation. Plans include a new four-million-gallon snowmaking pond and pumphouse, which would boost water output by 2,000 gallons per minute. This enhancement awaits approval at the March town meeting, where local support will be crucial. The facility will be cleverly integrated into a new par-3 golf course development, showcasing Sugarloaf's commitment to year-round recreational opportunities.
Beyond snow operations, Sugarloaf is taking significant steps to enhance its community infrastructure. The development of a new complex featuring a medical clinic centre addresses the important aspect of on-mountain safety and healthcare accessibility. Additionally, the inclusion of workforce housing demonstrates Sugarloaf's understanding of the challenges facing ski resort communities and their commitment to supporting seasonal staff.
The 2024-25 season has already proven successful for Sugarloaf, with consistent cold weather maintaining excellent coverage across their terrain network. These planned improvements align with parent company Boyne Resorts' reputation for substantial investments in their properties. The combination of enhanced lift infrastructure, improved snowmaking capabilities, and expanded facilities positions Sugarloaf strongly for future growth.

For regular visitors to Sugarloaf, these upgrades represent more than just infrastructure improvements. The faster summit access, increased snowmaking capacity, and enhanced facilities will create a more comprehensive and enjoyable experience for everyone from first-time visitors to seasoned locals. The resort's management team has indicated they will share more detailed information about the chairlift project in the coming months, suggesting there might be even more developments to look forward to.
These strategic investments reinforce Sugarloaf's standing as a leading Northeast ski resort, ensuring its position among New England's premier winter destinations for years to come. The comprehensive nature of these improvements reflects a thoughtful approach to resort development, balancing operational efficiency with guest experience and community needs.
