Schilthorn Summit Welcomes Visitors with Upgraded Cable Car System

The Schilthorn-Piz Gloria, a jewel in the Swiss Alps, has reopened its doors to skiers and riders after a five-month closure. This marks a significant step in the ambitious SCHILTHORNBAHN 20XX project, which aims to revolutionise access to this iconic summit. From 15 March 2025, visitors can once again ascend to the mountain's peak, enjoying breathtaking views and the famous 360° restaurant. This reopening is not just a return to normalcy, but a leap into the future of Alpine tourism.

The journey to this moment has been nothing short of remarkable. Over the past two years, the Schilthorn has undergone a dramatic transformation. New masts have been erected at dizzying heights, old infrastructure dismantled, and state-of-the-art facilities built in challenging conditions. The project even saw the temporary conversion of the revolving restaurant into accommodation for construction workers during the harsh winter months.

The new Funifor cable car system is at the heart of these improvements. Currently, one track is operational, allowing visitors to reach the summit. However, work continues on the second track, which will eventually enable maintenance without full closures. This dual-track system promises to make the Schilthorn accessible 365 days a year, a significant upgrade for this popular destination.

While the summit is now open, construction work continues. The old aerial tramway between Mürren and Birg will be dismantled after Easter, making way for the second track of the new system. By November 2025, both tracks are expected to be fully operational, featuring wind-resistant cabins that can each transport 100 people.

The SCHILTHORNBAHN 20XX project is set to conclude in spring 2026, bringing with it expanded guest areas, improved catering, and retail offerings. Despite the challenges posed by the high-altitude construction and unpredictable weather, the project has largely stayed on or ahead of schedule, thanks to the dedication of the workers and partners involved.

As the Schilthorn enters this new era, it offers an enhanced experience for skiers and riders. The improved accessibility and upgraded facilities promise to make this Swiss landmark an even more attractive destination for Alpine enthusiasts. While some construction work remains, the reopening of the cable car system marks a significant milestone in the Schilthorn's evolution, ensuring its place as a premier ski resort for years to come.
