Italian Ski Resort Introduces Daily Visitor Limit

Madonna di Campiglio, an increasingly popular ski area in northern Italy's Dolomites, has announced plans to limit the number of daily visitors starting from the next winter season. This decision comes as a response to the increasing challenges of managing large crowds of tourist during peak holiday periods. The resort aims to enhance safety on the slopes and improve the overall experience for skiers and riders.

The new policy will initially be trialled from December 28 to January 6, with a cap of approximately 14,000 to 15,000 skiers per day. Bruno Felicetti, director of Funivie Madonna di Campiglio, stated that the measure could be extended to other busy periods, including holiday weekends and the December 'Immaculate Conception' holiday.

The resort will implement a system of daily ski pass limits, available exclusively online. This approach will allow visitors to plan their trips in advance and may encourage some to choose less crowded days for their ski outings. The move represents a significant shift in how ski resorts balance tourism demands with environmental concerns and service quality.

Madonna di Campiglio has seen a surge in visitor numbers in recent years, particularly during holiday periods. This increase has put pressure on the resort's infrastructure and raised concerns about slope safety. The new visitor cap is part of a broader strategy to distribute tourist traffic more evenly throughout the winter season.

The resort's management will closely monitor the implementation of this new system and make adjustments based on skier behaviour and feedback. If successful, the visitor limit could become a permanent feature in future seasons.

Madonna di Campiglio is known for its stunning location in the Brenta Dolomites. The ski area offers 150 kilometres of slopes catering to all skill levels, from beginners to advanced skiers. With modern lift systems and a range of amenities, the resort has long been a favourite among Italian and international skiers. This new measure aims to preserve the quality of the skiing experience while addressing the challenges of its popularity.
