Purgatory Resort Unveils Significant Expansion Plans

Purgatory Resort in Colorado has announced a substantial development project for the upcoming 2025-26 ski season. The plan includes the installation of a new triple chairlift and the creation of up to five new trails and connectors. This expansion aims to increase the resort's frontside terrain and provide improved access to the mountain's summit, independent of the existing base areas.

Located in the San Juan Mountains between Durango and Silverton, Purgatory Resort is taking steps to enhance its offerings for skiers and riders. The new fixed-grip triple chairlift, manufactured by Skytrac, represents a significant investment in the resort's infrastructure.

The expansion project is set to broaden the range of advanced and expert-level terrain on the mountain's front side. Currently, Purgatory boasts 107 trails, four terrain parks, 11 lifts, and 1,635 skiable acres, featuring a mix of steep tree runs and wide-open slopes. The resort is also known for hosting Colorado's largest guided snowcat operation, Purgatory Snowcat Adventures, which covers an expansive 35,000 acres of diverse terrain.

To support this development, Purgatory is creating two new work groups, offering year-round positions to some previously seasonal staff. These teams will be crucial in constructing the new lift and trail network, as well as supporting future projects throughout the year.

Dave Rathbun, General Manager of Purgatory Resort, stated, "We're investing in improvements that will enhance the mountain experience and strengthen our year-round workforce and operational capabilities. It's about giving people the freedom to ski and making that experience better each season."

Due to the construction work, which will involve heavy equipment and increased traffic on mountain roads, the Purgatory Bike Park will be closed for the summer. The resort plans to use this time for trail maintenance and improvements in preparation for a future reopening.

Purgatory Resort, with its 107 trails and 1,635 skiable acres, offers a diverse range of skiing experiences. From its steep tree runs to wide-open cruisers, the resort caters to various skill levels. The addition of the new Gelande lift and accompanying trails is expected to further diversify the resort's offerings, particularly for advanced and expert skiers looking for challenging frontside terrain.
